Gallbladder Stones: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

The gallbladder is located at the right side of the abdomen, underneath the Liver. The main function of the Gallbladder is to store the concentrated bile produced by the liver. Gallstones are  formed in the gallbladder and are pieces of stones/solid material. The stones are formed when pigments and cholesterol get mixed together in bile - causing blockage and pain in the bile duct. The stones and polyps are produced when the wall of the gallbladder is infected.

Gallbladder Causes:

The major cause of gallbladder is cholesterol! As claimed by the healthline, around 85% of the gallbladder is caused by the accumulation of fat that leads to cholesterol. The other causes are calcium salts accumulation that leads to gallbladder. 

Cholesterol in Bile: Too much accumulation of cholesterol in the bile can lead to yellow colored stones. The function of bile is to dissolve the stones. However, if your liver accumulates fat, it leads to cholesterol and since the bile can’t dissolve it, this results to cthe formation of stones. 

Bilirubin in bile: Bilirubin is produced in your body when your liver destroys the old red blood cells. In some cases, like liver damage or some blood disorders, the liver produces more bilirubin than it should. Thus, overloading the gallbladder with minerals. The pigment gallstones are formed when gallbladder fails to break down the bilirubin produced in excess. Thus form the stones which are black or dark brown in color. 

Concentrated bile causing full gallbladder: The gallbladder empties its bile to stay healthy. However, when it fails, the bile content becomes over concentrated and leads to forming stones. 

Gall Bladder Stones : Symptoms

Gallbladder pain usually happens at the upper right abdomen. The pain is triggered with consuming food high in fat content - such as meat or fried food. The pain lasts for a few hours. Gallstones often don’t show any major symptoms. But if they are stuck in the duct, it can cause a blockage. In such cases, you can experience on or more symptoms listed below:

• Occasional acute pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
• Burping
• Dark Urine
• Diarrhea
• Indigestion/acidity
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Besides the listed symptoms in an asymptomatic gallstone there is no pain but the occasional pain is there when the gallstone blocks the movement of bile from gallbladder.
