The skin is the largest organ in the body and it is responsible for regulating the body's temperature, controlling the digestive system, regulating blood pressure and transporting waste.
Oily skin is one of the most common skin conditions which can result from a number of factors. It is also one of the most difficult to treat and can leave you with dry skin.
Excessive oil is usually caused by the skin's overproduction of oil (sebum), as a normal part of our bodily functions. However, when our bodies overproduce oil, it tends to make the skin oily, shiny and prone to bacterial infection. The oil glands will react by trying to get rid of the excess oil. When they are overly active, these glands can clog the pores through overproduction and that leads to the blockage of the tiny hair follicles which line each pore.
There are things we can do to help with oily skin, and some help is better than none. The first step is to ensure you shower as soon as you've washed your face. Warm water opens the pores around the face and rids them of the extra oil from your skin. Use a gentle loofah to gently wash your face in the lather from the showerhead. Use cool water after you splash your face to close pores and sooth any irritated skin.
Another important step is to moisturize your skin. This is critical. It is best to choose a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type. Some moisturizers work well with oily skin, while others work best with dry or combination skin. In terms of consistency, the loose, easily absorbed creams are the best.
If you have oily skin, the food you eat can be problematic. Stay away from fatty fast foods, soda, vinegar, chocolate, coffee, tea and anything else with high levels of fat and oil. Drink plenty of water and use a mild facial cleanser or soap. When washing your face in the shower, pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it, especially if you have a complexion problem.
How to take care of dry skin is to never let the dry patches of skin linger. Always keep your skin moisturized by using an oil-free moisturizer that contains SPF. Apply sunscreen lotion daily as well. If you do get a blemish, see a dermatologist right away. They will be able to tell you what products are good for clearing up blemishes.
