When a picture of Michael Phelps smoking from a bong surfaced in 2009,Sportspersons Who Struggled With Drugs and Alcoholism Articles it created quite a furor in the sporting fraternity. Though he pleaded guilty and admitted that it was a momentary lapse of judgment, it could not save him from losing a major endorsement contract and a suspension of three months from all major competitions. Phelps isn't the sole athlete who'd plunged into a nadir, dabbling with drugs, alcohol and other substance abuse.

There are other exemplary sportsmen who went through drug and alcohol abuse in their careers and bounced victorious from the abyss. Accounts from many such inpatient alcohol rehab centers stand testimony to this.

It is a known fact that many sportspersons have been part of a residential drug rehab treatment program at some point of their careers.

Diego Maradona, with that 'hand of God', and touted as the one of the most prolific players the game of football has ever seen, also struggled with drugs for over 20 years during his career. His otherwise brilliant career also got tainted with three suspensions and several failed drug tests.

Darryl Strawberry, a name to reckon with in the MLB World Series championship, also tasted ignominy because of his tryst with cocaine and alcoholism. The four-time champion faced enough flak from his admirers for tarnishing the spirit of the game.

Andre Agassi, while refuted charges of abuse during an amphetamine drug test in 1997, later admitted to using crystal meth many times during his career.

Josh Hamilton, another MLB great, found himself out of the game for eight years as he struggled with drugs and alcohol abuse. He closely retracted from the jaws of extinction by starting treatment in 2008. The champagne had given way to ginger ale to celebrate every victory.

Jon Daly, who won two major golf titles despite being an alcoholic, had to experience a dry spate of six years devoid of any title under his belt. His binge drinking sessions took their toll on his career.

Roy Tarpley had to pay very dearly for his alcohol problem as he was permanently banned by the NBA.

Todd Marinovich, who was seen as a rising star in NFL fell from grace due to his infamous substance abuse episodes. His extreme drinking session landed him in trouble and was considered inept for the game.

Dwight Gooden was a household name in baseball during the eighties. His infatuation and dangerous liaison with cocaine landed him in a rehab in 1987 and eventually got kicked out during the 1995 session.

Whether at any of the inpatient alcohol rehab centers in California, or elsewhere, with sheer determination and grit these sportspersons were able to beat addiction and succeed in finding their lost touch.
