Finally the “celebrity,” Samsung Galaxy S III has arrived. The product was launched in Europe and in the U.S. in early June this year.
Analysts’ View
J R Raphel, contributing editor, Computerworld in one of his articles has said that it is one of the most hotly anticipated Android phones ever. Don Reisinger, CNET Blog Network author in his review finds Samsung’s flagship handset as a much sought after iPhone alternative. According to newspaper reports, Samsung ‘runs out’ of Galaxy S III phones as huge demand for Android handsets turns into iPhone-style frenzy. And it is no surprise. Timing of launching of the product has best suited Samsung, as its main competitor Apple is not expected to come out with another iPhone until later this year.
Quality Standards
Samsung has already set up a quality assurance and support program called SAFE (Samsung Approved for Enterprise) for its product. The idea is to offer a software development kit to MDM and VPN providers through which “they can gain access to Samsung’s application programming interfaces and thus integrate their software on the SAFE devices for different wireless carriers”.
With the new trend “bring-your-own-device” (BYOD) picking up, the company has made arrangements to help enterprise IT shops to allow workers to use the Galaxy S III Smartphone on the job. Because of the SAFE compliance, Wagner thinks that IT compliance issues would settle down and workers would buy Galaxy S III. It seems the company is all set to go after the enterprise customer systematically with the best device at its disposal. Further, “Looking to importance attached to healthcare, government and finance, the company is in the process of obtaining FIPS compliance for Galaxy S III,” said Timothy Wagner, Vice President and General Manager of Samsung Enterprise Sales in his interview with the Computerworld. The company is already FIPS compliant on the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi tablet from Verizon Wireless.
Why Android Way
Interestingly Androids remained a second choice for many IT shops. However, among several Smart phones sold all over the world Android devices make half of them. A Gartner report shows that Androids now command more than 52% of the worldwide Smartphone market. In 2011, 26% of U.S. citizens used smart phones and mobile devices to access health related information, says a research report – Mobile Healthcare Opportunities: Monitoring, Applications and m-health strategies 2010-2014. “Android has the ability to blow that manageability door right open, with Samsung dragging Android through the enterprise,” Wagner said in his interview. Not surprisingly Samsung is the largest producer of Android phones.
Earning Expectations
The company is expecting to make record breaking sales from its handset business this year. JK Shin, Company’s telecommunication chief has predicted that Galaxy SIII sales would reach ten million next month i.e. in July this year. With Barclays already raising its third-quarter shipment forecast by one million to 15 million, the company is expected to break all previous earning records. And that would not surprise anyone since the sale of Galaxy SII and phone-cum-tablet Galaxy Note has so far been impressive.
