Ice cream may be delicious but are they nutritious?
Canada drugstore highlights that ice cream is such a refreshing dessert especially during the warmer months of the year. Not to mention, its various tasty flavors are so mouth watering – you just can’t get enough. However, its delicious taste could be misleading in such a way that it deceives your senses without knowing that it offers less or no nutritional value at all; and may lead ice cream lovers to buy and takeCanadian prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies .
This fact is not limited to ice cream alone, but it also includes frozen yogurt and snow cones as highlighted by food experts.
“Some people believe ice cream is rich in vitamin D and calcium, but that's not the case”, according to Suzy Weems, a registered dietitian who heads the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Baylor University and who formerly led the American Dietetic Association's Legislative and Public Policy Committee.
"It does have calcium along with vitamin D, vitamin A and some of the B vitamins to help with energy release, along with about 2.5 to 3 grams of protein – not much, but more than none," Weems stated in a university news release.
However, ice cream is loaded with calories – around 145 calories for a half-cup of vanilla and roughly 160 calories for chocolate chip, Weems highlighted.
Frozen yogurt contains lesser calories – 117 calories for a half-cup of vanilla – and a little more added calcium and protein, according to Weems, though it is very much similar with ice cream when it comes to nutritional value.
Snow cones have 90 calories per ounce of regular syrup, in comparison with 3.5 calories per ounce of sugar-free syrup, she added. One pump is equivalent to about an ounce of syrup.
In addition, snow cone syrups with fruity (and naturally healthy) names are mainly sugar with added water, which offers minimal health value, Weems said.
Thus, it should be noted not to be carried away by a food’s taste. It is always wise to research and know its ingredients and their corresponding pros and cons especially when it comes to our health.
