Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is something that is common in adults and children, and is an anxiety disorder, than when not understood or left untreated, can make life quite difficult.
Usually when someone has OCD, they have this anxious need to perform cyclic rituals and if they do not, then these obsessive thoughts consume them until they have completed the task. This can take up a lot of time and mental thought consumption for the person and that is why it is important to know some of the symptoms of it and some of the ways to treat and care for it. That way, if you or someone you know has this, it can be understood and hopefully aided in a way that will benefit your life.
Some common symptoms that accompany the disorder is a fear of dirt and contamination. People with OCD are always afraid that things contain germs or are unhealthy or hazardous to their health. They might frequently wash their hands or want to clean something repeatedly even if it is already clean. If you find yourself doing this, or always needing to wash your hands after you touch anything, then it might be an indication of the disorder.
Also, if you have other kinds of obsessive type thoughts, you might be troubled with pressing fears that you will make a mistake or be harmful to another person somehow. Also, you might have sinful thoughts or evil thoughts that constantly plague you mentally and make you feel afraid to think because they are always present in your mind. You will also have a fear of making a mistake in a social situation and humiliating yourself somehow. Finally, you will suffer from a lot of self doubt and reproaching and will need the reassurances of others to make you feel good again. You will also be obsessed with the notion of everything needing to be symmetrical, exact, or in perfect order.
These obsessions will lead to many different habits that might impede your living a normal and stress free life. In addition to constantly washing your hands, you might find yourself always checking things over and over and over again, like locked doors and stoves, to be sure they are off. Also, you might keep repeating phrases, words, or prayers over and over or find yourself counting out loud. Also, you might get in the habit of having to do something over and over, like a ritual, something that you cannot rest till it is done in a certain number of times that makes the cycle complete. You might also find yourself collecting things that are junk to most people.
One way to get treatment is to get some professional care. This will help you manage your anxiety and help you try and relieve some of your obsessive thoughts and not perform so many rituals. You might be able to join certain support groups, as well, so that you can interact with other people sharing the same experiences as you so you will be able to get the support you need from other people and not feel alone. Sometimes understanding what is going on might even help you cope with it better because you will know just why it is happening and understand that you are not the only one who is going through it. Talking about your experiences might make it a better ordeal.
