The first way to begin raising your child's self-esteem is to believe in them. Make sure that understand that they do not have to be perfect or the best at everything. Trying their best and failing is okay. Let them know that there is no one out there who is perfect. Find other trusted adults such as family members, friends and teachers who believe in your child as well. It is important that your child can see that others carry about them and plan to continue supporting them no matter what.
What activities does your child enjoy doing? Finding something they are good at and enjoy can bring a sense of pride to them. It could be playing a musical instrument, participating in a sport, producing art, or doing computer work. Allow that talent to grow. Tell your child that you are proud of them, and that they are doing a wonderful job. Celebrate your child’s victories in these activities and other areas of their life.
Have many conversations with your child. There are many types of conversations you can have. One type is allowing your child to freely talk to you. They should feel as if they can talk with you about whatever is happening in their life. They are looking for you to be non-judgmental. They are going through changes, and their reactions or thoughts on the matter might not be what you want to hear. Remember that they are entitled to their feelings. Have other positive conversations on the future. Talk about what a wonderful life they will have. Instill in them that they can be and do anything that they desire.
Do not encourage your child to follow a weight loss diet. Many times diets end up causing weight gain and years of emotional turmoil. Dieting is based on a model of deprivation. You may encourage your child to stay healthy be eating nutritious food and exercising. After all, this is the best way to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Instead, begin teaching your child about the hunger satisfaction mechanism. This tells you when your body is hungry and when it is full. Focus on health more than weight loss.
Most importantly, have fun with your child. Be able to laugh and play as a family. Knowing that you love them will give your children the sense of comfort and security they need.
