Bacterial vaginosis is an infection due to the overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina. Usually, the vaginal environment has both good and bad bacteria. Some of the signs of BV include a burning sensation while peeing, green or grey vaginal discharge, itching near the vagina, fishy and foul odor after sex.

Though there are not many medications for BV over the counter, you can try boric acid capsules for vaginal insertion. It is important to note that boric acid is poisonous and not edible. You must use it only for vaginal insertion. If you suspect bacterial vaginosis, it is better to consult a doctor before using over-the-counter medications. Some STIs have symptoms that are similar to bacterial vaginosis.

Medications for BV

Sometimes, bacterial vaginosis can clear on its own but, it is not worth the wait as it might take days for symptoms to disappear. By consulting a doctor, your symptoms will clear within 2-3 days. It is necessary to consult a doctor for bacterial vaginosis if pregnant as it could lead to premature delivery, low birth weight and, related issues.

Medications for bacterial vaginosis include metronidazole, tinidazole, clindamycin and secnidazole. Metronidazole is available in the form of pills and gel. Tinidazole is also in pill form for oral ingestion. Clindamycin is in the form of a cream that you can insert into the vagina. Secnidazole is an oral antibiotic that is available in the form of granules.

Bacterial vaginosis can spread only between female sexual partners. So, it is wise to seek testing and treatment if your partner has bacterial vaginosis. It is essential to continue treatment even after the symptoms disappear as there is always the risk of recurrence. BV tends to recur after three months or one year, even after treatment. Your doctor might suggest a prolonged treatment plan when there is a recurrence. Food items that contain lactobacilli or good bacteria, such as yogurt, can help to prevent BV.

Most medications for BV over the counter are not as effective as prescription medicines. Home remedies such as garlic, tea tree oil, and hydrogen peroxide are effective for mild infections but; might not always work for severe cases. Although bacterial vaginosis is not a fatal condition, it is not something that you should ignore. It is wise to treat BV before symptoms get worse.
