Last time, we talked about 10 media related applications that VR will offer to our lives. Now, just days before 2016 arrives, we're gonna talk about 10 VR games that we hope we're gonna see during 2016.
Before starting, a short summary of the competing headsets:
Playstation VR is the only console candidate, boasting as the cheaper alternative and aiming at the ever expanding community of over 30 Million PS4 owners worldwide.
HTC Vive is the last to take part in this race, but certainly not the least, since having an active collaboration with Valve and its dearly beloved Steam Store probably gives it a headstart in the content side of VR—especially in the eyes of indie developers.
Oculus Rift is the father of modern VR, being the first headset that jumpstarted the hype after its overly successful Kickstarter campaign, and the infamous Facebook deal of 2014. Its price is estimated to be lower than HTC Vive, but above Playstation VR.
Now that we got over and done with this, let's move forward on the real deal: the games. 10 games that surprised us, amazed us, and made us count the days till the release of the headsets actually arrives. From top to bottom—unranked—these games are:
(Playstation VR)
You're probably vaguely aware of the tech demos that included dinosaurs chasing you, underwater excursions and many other impressive things. Robinson: The Journey is Crytek's product of work from one of those demos that ended up becoming a full fledged game. Using the CryEngine technology, and the narrative prowess of VR, you take the role of young boy who ends up in an island full of dinosaurs of any size. A Jurassic Park inspired experience, this is a game that everyone will fall in love with.
I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin(Playstation VR)
I'm sure you know the game Psychonauts. Also, I'm sure you know that this list is all about VR games. Well, you got that right. Psychonauts is coming to VR through Playstation VR, in a way to bridge the last two installments of the Psychonauts franchise. Now, knowing you, you probably wonder what is so special about this game. Well, you will be able to jump inside the mind of different characters, changing your point of view, and opening up new gameplay opportunities for VR in general. Even so, Double Fine Productions are also adding telekinesis and pyrokinesis to your choice of powers, so take a pick.
Just an announcement trailer, so we probably won't get it during 2016. Even so, we're still hoping.
Rez Infinite(Playstation VR)
We have talked about Rez Infinite, we have loved it (some more than others) and we're here once again to get it into the list of our ten, most awaited games of 2016. Enhance Games recreated a 2001 game in a VR form, also adding a haptic feedback surprise in it. Even so, for more information about the game, check our articles.
The Modern Zombie Taxi Company(Playstation VR)
What is The Modern Zombie Taxi Company? I'll tell you what it's not. It's not your typical arcade-ish game, not when you take the role of someone who is running errands for cartoonish, zombie-like characters, traveling through Zombieton (hell, yeah! A rad name for a zombie town) in a classic black London cab. Sony Santa Monica Studio is doing an excellent job introducing us to an old-classic game world, where you play mini-games in VR. We're sure we'll get amazed by it.
Did we tell you that there is crazy driving included? We didn't not!
Eagle Flight(Playstation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift)
Ubisoft is known as one of the most crazy, innovative studios around the game industry. Also, it is the first third-party publisher to develop a game in VR. Eagle Flight is one of my personal favorites, giving you and your friends the opportunity to travel the skies of a 50 years abandoned Paris. Furthermore, the game will sport dogfighting action (with other birds) and an open, cooperative flight experience above the most beautiful city of all time. Another tech demo that evolved into a full game, Eagle Flight surely seems neat and interesting.
The graphics, the style, the flying above the abandoned Paris; seriously, give me a reason not to love this game.
Job Simulator(Playstation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift)
I get that we're in an experimentation period for virtual reality, so games like Owlchemy Labs' Job Simulator are important to test the mettle of VR. However, you probably ask yourself what is so special about a Job Simulator, since it is a game that lets you experience an array of different, real-life, jobs? Well, there is a twist here. Those jobs are based to the history of human jobs as robots see them. It is funny, it is weird, and it's certainly one of our favourites.
Okay, the guy is in serious need of a break. He's a maniac!
Golem(Playstation VR)
Ah, Golem. We've talked about Golem before, and we certainly loved it even more. However, there is always time to talk about it once again. Indie studio Highwire Games, a studio which is comprised by veteran game designers, came up with an idea for a game. A young kid who is seriously injured, is stranded to a bed, unable to get out and explore the world. However, soon he/she develops the power to create and control rock creatures named Golems. A touching premise for a story, and with the help of Halo's and Destiny's composer, Marty O'Donnel, this game is sure to gives us a great time playing it.
Beautiful, exceptional, magical!
World War Toons(Playstation VR, Oculus Rift)
Reload Studios is a mix of game developers from many different industries. Even so, they came up with an idea for a cartoonish, World War II representation, one that is apparently family-friendly. With a strong appeal to what is fun, and with heavy Looney Tunes approach to their cel-shaded world, this game looks fun, interesting and certainly one of our favorite.
I love the song, and the pick-up boxes, and generally everything about it.
Damaged Core(Oculus Rift)
From the indie developer behind the first-person shooter The Conduit, High Voltage Software takes the next step towards VR with Damaged Core. A Tron-like world, Damaged Core uses an "on-trail" approach to its gameplay that transports the player from one place of the map to another, reducing the motion sickness that running in VR can induce (I already love it). Even so, this game quickly turned up being one of our favorite arcade-like games for VR.
It's fast, it's crazy and it's everything we want.
Lucky's Tale(Oculus Rift)
While we have talked about the possible hindrances (or advantages, it's yet unsure) of VR platforming, Playful and Oculus VR are working together into creating a VR platform named Lucky the fox. The true magic of this game, however, hides in the family-friendly, enchanting atmosphere of a colorful world, where Lucky can do everything that a traditional platform hero can—jump, climb, spin and run endlessly. Even so, this game takes A for creativity, and we'll make sure to keep an eye out for it.
I can't shake up the feeling that this game borrows too many things from Nintendo's Super Mario, but it's okay. It's cute and everything I would need to spend an afternoon relaxing.
