3 Boat-Docking Do's and Don’ts

Boating is both a glamorous and relaxing recreation. However, when done incorrectly, it can actually become just the opposite. Amateurs can go from a picturesque glider on the open water to a clumsy, noisy arrival that may be, at best, awkward and, at worse, unsafe. Either way, a poor finish to your water excursions may dissolve any charisma you gained earlier in the day. Here are the three boat-docking dos and don’ts, which protect from such an inept ending to your otherwise perfect boating day.

First, the Dos:

1. DO take a boating safety course.

Each state offers these invaluable certification courses, which explain in great detail all the necessary safety tips and regulations you need to have fun out on the water. Not only will these courses guarantee you operate legally, but also that you have all the knowledge you need to enjoy your boat safely.

1. DO neatly tie and coil excess lines.

This practice not only makes your boat neater and presentable, but also more manageable and safe. Unkempt lines can easily tangle even the most experienced boater when caught under his or her feet. So, take care and be sure to keep excess lines in check.

1. DO know the low water depths in and around your projected dock.

It’s important you know exactly where the lower sections of the dock area may be. Not only should you be well versed in the depths along the planned dock, you should also know the low depth areas in and around your approach. The knowledge of where you may run aground could save you from an embarrassing failed docking attempt.

Now, the DON’Ts:

1. DON’T forget to factor in the wind and current.

Even the gentlest wind and current can affect your trajectory. Be sure to respect these elements and to always take them into consideration when docking. You will be grateful you did.

1. DON’T rely on dock help.

A captain of a boat should always be the one in charge and control. Never rely heavily on the help of those assisting from the dock. Instead, depend on your boating skills and calculations to dock properly. Again, you are the captain, it’s important you remain such especially when ending your trip.

1. DON’T forget to be patient.

Docking a boat is a slow and steady process; it absolutely rewards patience. Don’t be in a rush, instead commit to docking your boat properly. Doing so will insure both you and your passengers’ safety and the preservation of your boat.

            Those lucky enough to enjoy the recreation of boating know what a treat it is. However, when done incorrectly, this beloved pastime can become an arduous and possibly dangerous affair.
