An easy to follow tutorial explaining the art of European 4 in 1 Chain Maille.
Welcome to the European 4 in 1 bracelet. This is an easy weave to make and ideal for beginners. It is better designed to fit quite snugly on your wrist. All we need is a pair of pliers and jump rings. The jump rings I have used are ID (internal diameter) 4.1mm using 1.02 mm wire.
Initially make a small chain to use as a starting point.
On the last chain attach one open jump ring and put two closed jump rings through this and close.
Part the two closed jump rings to make a triangle.
Next add another open jump ring connecting the two closed jump rings. The new ring needs to go through the ring on the right hand side from the front, round the back and through the closed ring on the left hand side
I have used a copper ring in the middle as it is easier to see how the weave develops.
Continue with the weave until you have achieved the correct length.
Note: If you need to put your work down put a cocktail stick through the last two closed rings. As the weave develops the centre ring runs in the same direction. It is so irritating to finish the bracelet and realise the centre ring changes direction.
You will now have a bracelet with three rows of jump ring. It is now time to finish the sides.
On one side place one open jump ring through first and second jump rings and close this. Then continue with the third and fourth rings until this side is complete.
The other side is identical.
Next is to attach the clasp. Using the centre ring place a slightly larger jump ring and attach a toggle clasp and the other end the ring clasp.
This bracelet is a very versatile piece of handmade jewellery. The centre ring can be either copper or gold fill. It is possible to use a thicker centre ring and change the look yet again. Or even leave it as a traditional European 4 in 1 bracelet. Enjoy!
