It seems that when it comes to boosting your brain-power everyone has an angle - and it can be difficult to work out which direction or which approach you should take.
Here is a list of assorted tools and techniques, stripped of their packaging, for you to trial.
Pick and choose what works well for you, and keep this list handy for regular referencing.
Trial a new technique each week and in three months you will have twelve extra or improved competencies.
Or, put the opportunity off and in three months you will have twelve competencies less than you could have.
List of Brain Improvers
Write down goals. Tried and true and based in research from the 1950s. Using this simple technique enormously increases your chances of success. It is a focusing tool. What you think about is what you pursue and create in your life. Best if you write it down and then refer to it within your daily workload or activities for more powerful results.
Ensure you attach a strong visual component and a positive emotional component to using your daily affirmation or goal statement. This pulls your nonconscious brain into play, and it outranks your conscious intent by 5:1 - so give it what it needs to get you what you want. Spend ten seconds five times a day seeing and feeling that goal statement.
Make your exercise routine easy as pie from the start. When your body is able to step up the quality or quantity, it will tell you. Trust it. Pull back and aim for longevity; you have decades left on this planet, set yourself up to maintain your health for the long haul.
Shift the balance of your food intake between carbs and protein to below 50/50, favoring protein. You need more carbs to give you the energy that protein provides - that is, you will overeat. But even worse, carbs just plain make you hungry because the simple carbs and processed carbs you mostly eat don't have the nutrients and energy in them that your body needs - so your body will demand more, i.e. you often feel hungry or tired from eating carbs. Feed your body properly and your brain can function properly. Deprive your body of a decent diet and there'll be little brilliance coming from a brain preoccupied with feeling hungry, feeling tired, and where it can get it's next food hit from.
Use color and visual aids when you write notes in meetings, at your desk, in your team, at workshops or conferences, or at home. This enhances your brain's ability to remember and integrate what it is you want to do.
Have five different colored pens, textas or pencils in your drawer. Have a few packs of kids' stick-on shapes and animals to highlight key points and grab more of your brain's attention: having fun is a powerful highlighter. Use a bright highlighter or several different colored highlighters when reading documents, notes, books or other text material.
Don't be frightened of putting color and notation directly on to the text. It exists for you to learn, so if you can highlight it in a way that will increase memory, integration, application and create easy referencing for yourself or others in the future - go right ahead.
To achieve a goal you need to do something toward it every day, even if it is a small thing or some form of mental prepartion. It should become a daily habit that you are leaning toward your goal, mentally, psychologically and with specific action. Each morning before rising or during your shower frame that day's goal-focused action as one sentence. Ensure the statement is in the present tense: I make five cold calls today. I am calm and organized with my workload today. I complete all of today's tasks on time. Support your brain's capacity to act by giving it clear, consistent, daily instructions.
Develop templates for as many things as you can. Templates mean you take the knowledge you have and create a template from it that can be used repeatedly without having to waste brain-power reinventing the wheel each time. Do this for various types of documents: business letters, memos, reports, articles, executive summaries, analyses, sales letters, advertisements, recruitment ads, selection documents, productivity assessment, team reporting, ideas brainstorming, worst-case scenario assessment, your domestic shopping list with tick-boxes, request forms, submissions, report updates, team updates, et cetera. Free up your brain for more valuable activity.
The need for positive energy is not simply a matter of not having negative energy, it means having active, positive energy. Positive belief and forward momentum should be the hallmark of your approach to life and your goals. Ensure you are eager, clear and unstoppable in the identification and pursuit of your goals.
If you are having trouble with that, review and upgrade your health and approach in each of these main areas:
food - eating sugar, carbohydrates, stimulants and downers, and, for some, dairy food can slow, fatten and even depress you;
lifestyle - does it promote a primary focus on helping you achieve your goals, or are you still stuck in a self-destructive lifestyle, staying up late, sleeping in and missing out on that powerful new life energy of the morning, consuming alcohol or drugs, overeating, feeling tired as you begin your day, repeating and compounding this routine;
exercise - you will probably live for many decades and in the 21st century there will be little excuse for incompetence for those over 50 years of age as there was in the 20th century - remember the fitness motto: fit for life;
continuous learning - bringing your mind into the Information Age and then keeping it apace with a world that will change in ways you don't even imagine at this point is one of your basis tasks for the rest of your life; finally, surround yourself with
positive people and things - to be brief and succinct: surround yourself with people, books, movies, television programs, newspapers, magazines, web sites, web feeds, ezines, chat rooms, sports groups, community groups, family groups, colleagues, associates and neighbors who are overtly positive in outlook, speech and action, and simultaneously weed out from your life the opposite in every category. Each of these will enhance your brain-power enormously.
Move beyond your limits, let your subconscious mind tell you things, and identify and grab opportunities on a regular basis. Creating the flexibility to have what it takes to build and fill the space your dream will occupy needs to become a habit. It needs to be part of your regular approach to life. This will bring you up against the limits and fears that have to date been part of your life, and held you back. You need to step up to, through and beyond these on a routine basis to ensure you grow fit enough, creative enough, big and strong enough for where you want your goals to take you.
Find yourself a mentor, even if you only communicate every few weeks. There are many new options for value-added mentoring now. Ensure you have this basic support tool working for you whether you are an employee, a freelancer, or a business or ebusiness owner.
