The When, Where and How of Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is a very intricate process that depends on, and only on the writer. While this career choice is hard to get into, it is remarkably easy to make your mark on the writing field and make good money in the process. There are three basic things about freelance writing that every writer, new or not, ought to know or have an understanding of. We look at them in detail here:

The When of Freelance Writing

There IS no when to freelance writing. A proficient writer can write at any time of the day or night; one flash of inspiration and he’s up and typing on the computer. However, this is true only for a few writers. Many of us write at specific times, such that our creativity becomes limited to those hours only. A work at home mother will get up early to get in one or two hours before the kids wake up. A college student will work in the evenings after lectures. However, with freelance writing, it’s best not to get into a rut such that your creativity suffers.

The Where of Freelance writing

Here, most writers have a choice. Some of us need blank walls around us with zero noise levels to be able to work proficiently. Others need a noisy environment. Others can work anywhere; from the midst of a volcano eruption to an aisle seat on a tram in London. You get to decide where you are most comfortable, and work from there.

The How of Freelance writing

Again, there is no How to freelance writing. All you need to do is sit at your computer or type-writer, and get going. Those working on a specific project already have some idea of what they’re going to be writing, while others sit before their blank screens and get their muse together. In the modern world, however, this approach is becoming obsolete, since every writer worth his while is charging by the hour. Unfortunately for us, the client doesn’t want to be charged for the muse. If you need to write a script that may have to be edited quite a bit, you’re better off with a word processor or computer. Otherwise, all the best with your typewriter.
