Area Rug Cleaning Tips

Area rugs are the perfect fix for vacant tile and hardwood floor space. They are cozy on the feet and soft enough to lie on top of. Though, if you happen to have such a rug in a high-traffic area, it’s likely to become dirty fairly quickly. This is especially true in homes with pets and children. As such, the rugs must be cleaning regularly, both manually and with the aid of a carpet cleaner. Cleaning should take place at least once a month, with additional touch-ups taking place as needed. Preparation

Step 1 – Remove any furniture, toys, and puppies off of the area. Be sure to grab a hand from a family member or friend to move any larger furniture items.

Step 2 – Now roll! Starting at one end, roll the material up and move it into an open space. This will provide the material with ample room to dry later on. Make sure the new area is clean and unroll.

Step 3 – Take a vacuum and use it to remove any pet hair, food crumbs and random debris. Be thorough.

Manual Cleaning

Step 1 – Head down to the store and pick up a manual carpet cleaning solution. There are a variety of choose from. Select the product that best suits your individual needs. While you’re shopping, purchase yourself another hand-carpet cleaning solution.

Step 2 – Gather up all of your cleaning supplies and use them on the material. Additional items might include a hot pan of water, brush and rag.

Step 3 – Apply your cleaning solution to the top of the material in a row. The entire area should be misted as evenly as possible. Most solutions will go a long way, and as such, one or two squirts should suffice.

Step 4 – With a soft bristle brush, spread the cleaning agent into the material. Use a circular motion to ensure the solution gets in deep. Once completed, the entire area should be covered.

Step 5 – Soak the rag with warm water and wring it out before wiping the treated area in straight lines. Dirt and soap should be squeezed out regularly.

Step 6 – Steps 5 and 3 should be repeated until the entire rug has been treated.

Step 1 – Find a rental service and procure a carpet cleaner. These typically go for around twenty dollars per day, plus cleaning solution costs. If you wish to purchase a cleaner, you are looking at a cost between $50 & $400 depending on type and brand.

Step 2 – Remove the soap and water hold from the cleaner. It should lift right off. Read the directions on the holder. In most cases, there will be a soap line and water line. Fill with water up to the designated line before adding soap.

Step 3 – Once the holder has been replaced on the unit, power on the cleaner.

Step 4 – Use unit in a back and forth motion. On most models, there will be a button or trigger to release the soap and water solution. Once the entire area has been treated, allow it to dry.
