Anyone who ever watched the now debunked HBO television series and later movie,Building Your Dream Closet Articles “Sex and the City” probably remembers how Carey Bradshaw, the series main character, was devoted to her closet. In fact when Mr. Big, her on again, off again boyfriend of ten years finally proposed to her, he asked her if she wanted a diamond ring and Carey, true to knowing what was important in life, answered, “No, just build me a really big closet.” And let’s face it; you don’t have to be Carey Bradshaw to love your closet more than a diamond ring.

The trick to a really good closet though isn’t just the size, although that was Carey’s only requirement. Yes size matters, women like big closets because that means room for every season, every mood and every type of shoe imaginable, but the trick to good closet systems isn’t found in the size of the closet alone, it is also found in how the closet itself is organized.

A good closet has closet systems in place to organize everything from the shoes at the bottom all the way up to the hats at the top, and then everything in between two. Closet systems are not just about storage either. They are about organizing and putting Martha Stewart to shame with their efficiency.
The first step to a good closet system is knowing what you want it to look like in the end. In order to envision your dream closet you need to open up your closet door and look at what you have in place right now. Ask yourself what do you love and what to you hate about your space and how it’s being used.

The most important change you can make in your closet is to create order. The well-organized closet systems are orderly. You should be able to reach into your closet in the dark and know exactly what your hand is going to come back holding. You may not be able to envision this world of order now as you stand looking into a dark crammed walk in closet, but that is why you need vision.

If your space is dark, envision adding light. If your space is crammed and everything is hung in the same manner it came out of the dryer, it might be time to look at how you want the space used more effectively. In the end, Carey Bradshaw got her dream closet system, complete with mirrors, carpet, shelves and lights, a small version of a mini mall by all standards and it was everything she envisioned a closet being. In the end did she make the right choice picking a closet over a diamond ring? Well the answer is subjective of course but you can’t lose a closet and nobody ever got mugged for one either.
