Guidelines and tips to make a minimal living room work in your home.

A minimal living room is ideal for you if you are tidy and hate clutter (Just hope your partner or flat mate is of the same mind as you or there will be trouble ahead!)

This is quite a contemporary style and works best if you have modern furniture with clean lines,Create a Minimal Living Room Articles white or cream painted walls and neutral flooring. Large cream sofas and beige carpeting or hardwood flooring work well. Because not much is on display, every item that you can see has more impact (and gets more attention) so you have to carefully select every single object you put in your room. Here are some tips for a successful minimalist room:-

  • Keep your room neutral but inject color with one of two pieces in a bright shade - a single purple chair and vase or a few red cushions.
  • Use quality furniture because each piece will be on show and have very little to cover it.
  • You can not really achieve this look unless you have plenty of storage to hide everything away, so have a place for everything out of view and put everything away as soon as you are finished with it.
  • Your room has to be kept dust free and clean as there is nowhere for dirt to hide either.
  • Use plain fabrics for window cutains and simple geometric or straight valances or cornices. Cream tab top curtains on a simple rod are good. Or you could  make things ultra simple by fitting plain cream window blinds.
  • You don't need many ornaments but you should have one or two pieces to add interest to your room - one or two pieces on the wall and one or two large ornaments such as a vase or coffee table book are enough
  • If you think of modern art galleries they are as minimalist as they come. This is so that they focus attention on the exhibits and not on the surroundings. This kind of room is the best place to show off a work of art or sculpture whether it is your own or a piece you bought.
