Ever since an early Stone Age man sat down on a rock to eat his meal, the world has moved toward a greater awareness of the importance chairs. It is a type of seat created by Michael Thonet.
He succeeded in coming up with the idea for using a single piece of curved wood. Until the introduction of something called bentwood, all seats contained expensive hand carved joints. The expense associated with those joints underlined the lengthy process used to create them.
Thonet showed chair-making experts how to bend wood while creating something that could help a person to remain seated while eating. His instructions revealed how a single piece could be bent into a combination of back and legs. The finished product featured a combination of strength and grace. Moreover, it was lightweight in nature.
Hans Wegner applied Thonet’s technique to an attempt at improving on the Ming chair. He chose to hand weave a seat using paper cord. During World War II, that material had come out of grain binders in Sweden. It had shown the ability to function as a substitute for jute. Wegner used it to make a seat, one that could be placed on a steam bent wooden frame.
Jean Pauchard was presented with a great challenge. After a year of work he met that challenge. He created a perforated seat with a satisfactory amount of stability. His creation paved the way for development of the familiar café chair. Along with Thonet and Wegner, Pauchard demonstrated the ability to combine beauty and functionality, while helping people to stay seated during the course of a meal.
