Problems often don’t happen overnight. Believe it or not there are some things that you can do to prevent major problems. First don’t dump things down the sink without using a garbage disposal. You could clog your pipes by doing this. If you don’t have a disposal then scrape off your plates into the trash and use a sink plug with a mesh basket when you do the dishes. Also never pour grease down your sink even when you have a disposal. When grease cools it hardens and will clog the pipes as well.

There are a few things you can do to ensure that you plumbing stays operational. Just keep your drains as clean as you can and don’t flush or dump things that you aren’t sure will go through the pipes. In case of an emergency keep the name and number of a reputable plumber handy.
