Mark it on your calendar - Before the first snow, take your best ladder and go up to the roofing to inspect the gutters. Clean them out thoroughly. If you don't, some bit of debris somewhere will dam up the snow's runoff. This means that you'll have a lake of melted snow water at the edge of your roof pressing down on it, and this is a recipe for disaster. Pick a day in the late fall that's likely to be before the first snow and get it done.

You should get up on your roofing and have a look around every couple of months. Inspect shingling and look for damage. Basically, if you see anything that looks weird, that's a sign that you might have a problem. Usually you can see shingle damage and even replace the shingles yourself. You can see an area of the shingles that's worn, and this is a warning sign that it's time to get them replaced.

Trying To Do Too-Tough Jobs By Yourself
