Sprinkler Systems Layout For Your Home

Before you lay the grass or plant the first flower or vegetable you want to get an idea of where the sprinkler systems are going to be laid out. One of the most common mistakes made is setting up the entire front or backyard and then realizing that you have to go back and figure out how the water is going to get to all of the plants. By investing a little time upfront to make sure that everything is well planned you will be able to sit back and enjoy the area with little to no upkeep once the project is completed.

Draw Out a Plan
Unless you are a professional landscaper, you want to draw out how your sprinkler systems are going to look in your yard. If you work with a drawing to scale you can figure out exactly how many plants your yard will take, how much grass you will need and even how many water system parts and tubes you need. Sit outside wherever you are planning to make changes and think about where each item should go. Do you want to walk right outside your back door and be able to feel the grass against your toes? Do you want to be able to look out the window and see all of your flowers blooming? Each person can make his or her own decision for what is practical and what is really desired.

Figure Out How to Run the Water to Each Location
Once you know where everything is going to go, think about how you will need to get the water to each place. Most sprinkler systems can be configured in different ways to incorporate into your design. Remember that not all plants will need the same amount of watering or the same method of watering. Some trees, shrubs and flowers can be on a drip system but the grass will need water to cover the larger area and soak everything.

You also want to consider how you are going to run the water. There may be tubes that need to be dug into the ground so that they will not interfere with the overall look. Consider setting up all parts of the sprinkler system and then planting things within the specified areas.

Start Digging and Connecting
Following your plan continues with laying all of the pieces out. When you are satisfied with the way it looks you can begin digging the tubes. If you are planning to lay sod you may be able to get away with laying it on top of the tubes and thus avoiding all the digging. Remember that nothing needs to be in perfectly straight lines. There is no room for error. But you need to know where everything is so that you won't run into the tubes while planting all of the vegetation.

Calling a professional is always an option, but there is something so satisfying about designing and landscaping your own yard. By taking some time to plan out what you want the final product to look like, you will be able to set up exactly the type of space you will look forward to spending time in.
