As the school year comes to a close seniors will have events that they are very much looking forward to. Even with all of the increased awareness about drinking and driving in the school systems through organizations such as MADD,
Dare, and SADD, there will still inevitably be some high school seniors that won't make it through prom and graduation without becoming a statistic.
Numerous schools try their best to encourage teens to have a great time at graduation and prom without the utilization of drugs or alcohol but for some the temptation to use is just too great, notably during this time of intense celebration. High schools all over the United States now have class graduation parties so as to avoid seniors going from party to party and perhaps getting into a drunk driving incident.
Prom night is a night which many opt to handle easily by paying for a group of friends to have a limousine for this special event which obviously prevents any of them from driving even if they had been drinking. Parents tend to feel this expense is a worthwhile one for the peace of mind it gives them with and hiring a limo and driver for the evening when divided by a group of friends is not usually very pricey.
Underage drinking is the source of numerous DUI offenses and deaths. And while it may be illegal for teens to drink alcohol most discover a way to get some whether from an older friend, relative, or simply by obtaining a fake identification card. In a perfect world, no one who is not legal would be able to obtain alcohol but that is simply not the case. As parents it is important that you fight to keep your kid from turning into another drunken driving statistic.
Keeping teens safe during Senior Week is an important role of parents, teachers, and all adults in the community. During this period of time education is helpful but limits can also help save lives. Don't be afraid to limit their activities to those that don't involve driving during this time of the year. After all, if it keeps them from becoming another statistic it is worth the battle they will have with you. Don't avoid confrontation to allow them to make bad decisions. Keep your teens safe from hurting themselves or someone else; after all we parents know that teens aren't as invincible as they would like to believe.
