The Infamous Urban Clothing line

In urban community, they say that there is only one kind of clothing line that can provide the right style and the perfect trend that can represent fashion in the urban community. And that clothing line can only be found in rocawear.

The rocawear is a fashion clothing line popular among the urban community and the hip-hop community. A clothing label founded in 1999 by Jay-Z, and Damon Dash. Being part of the rocawear industry, is also the head of the hip hop label Roc-a-Fella Records. Roc-A-Fella Records is an American hip hop/rap record label. The label is owned by Universal Music Group.

Because of its popularity, the rocawear founders decided on expanding their clothing lines into other apparels such as children, juniors, socks and sandals, leather suede and fur outerwear, handbags and belts, lounge wear and big & tall, headwear, jewelry, and sunglasses.

Its fame among the urban community has brought an annual sale of over $1 billion US dollars to the infamous clothing line.

In March of 2007, Jay-Z sold the rights to the rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group, a brand management company that licenses brands to retailers and manufacturers primarily in the apparel, footwear, and apparel accessory industries, for $204 million. Jay-Z still retained his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development.

But other than fame and fortune, it still didn’t escape the doubtful eyes of the public. On January 17, 2007, allegations were made of raccoon-dog fur being used in two styles of jackets, rocawear pulled all of the garments from the department stores where this product was shipped. A representative of rocawear stated the company was unaware the fur was being used and had notified manufactures it was not permitted. The items, in addition to being pulled from department stores, were also removed from the brands official website.
