Installing Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is a man-made plant that can be used outdoors in place of a natural lawn(grass) to give the home a more natural and aesthetic look. Natural lawns are grasses that are grown outdoors. These grasses are tough to maintain because they require regular grooming and watering to keep the outdoor neat and beautiful. Hence, the introduction of artificial grasses, and these grasses require less effort and low-cost maintenance.

Components of Artificial Grass

Different things make up artificial grass. They are:

• Grass: The grass-like features are made from different materials ranging from synthetic fiber, plastic, and cloth.

• Bedding: The bedding is the thick structure to which the grasses are attached. It is made from thick rubber and consists of a layer of 3 or more sheets of rubber.

These artificial grasses exist in two forms:

• Tile form: Here, the grass comes in small rectangular tiles. When installing this grass, it can take many tiles for a large area but is better suited for small areas.
• Rug form: These grasses come in long sheets and are better suited for covering large areas.

Tools Used For Installing Artificial Grass

• Turf Cutter: Used to trim or cut the surface where the artificial grass will lay.

• Stanley Knife or Craft knife: This is used to trim or cut the artificial grass to suitable dimensions.

• Measuring tape: This tool is used in measuring the size of the area where the grass will lie and the artificial grass itself.

• Hammer: The hammer is used only when laying the artificial grass on a soil surface.

• Roller/planks: They are used for compacting and removing unevenness.

• Joining tape/grass glue: They are used for joining pieces of grass together.

• Ground pins: These pins are used to hold the grass firmly to the ground.

• Sharp sand: This is used as bedding where the grass will lay.

Installing Artificial Grass

Here are steps to help you install artificial grass yourself at home:

1. Measure out the area which you want to cover with artificial grass.
2. Ensure that the selected area has good drainage because waterlogging can damage the grass.
3. Clear the area for study soil. Using the turf Cutter, clear the natural grass and scrape the soil to a very thin layer. For concrete, clean the area thoroughly and remove any debris from the area.
4. For soil, compact the area and lay your sharp sand base to a minimum of 40mm thickness.
5. Using a roller, vibrating plate, or plank, compact the sharp sand.
6. For both concrete and soil surfaces, roll out your performance pad to cushion the area and, using glue, attach it to the concrete floor. For soil surfaces, roll out an underlay unto the performance pad and glue them together.
7. Gently lay down the artificial grass on the pad or underlay and allow it to settle for at least three hours
8. After the artificial grass has settled, using the joining tape attach the grass joins together.
9. Using the Stanley knife, neatly trim down the edges of the artificial grass.
10. Pin the grass to the ground using a ground pin.
