Discover the touching tale of a family's journey through pet loss, adoption, and fostering. This story highlights the transformative power of love and the joy that adopting and fostering pets can bring to both humans and animals. It's a testament to the difference one can make in the lives of pets in need, and how sometimes, the pets we think we're saving end up saving us.
The loss of a beloved pet can leave an irreplaceable void in one's heart. This was the case for a family who had cherished their dog Pepper for ten years before she succumbed to congestive heart failure. Pepper's passing left them yearning for the companionship and love that only a pet can provide. In the wake of their loss, the family decided to explore the world of pet rescue, a decision that would lead them to two remarkable dogs, Skye and Savanna.
Determined to find a new furry friend, the family began their search with a specific breed in mind: a Border Collie mix. However, fate had other plans. A photo of a little pup with mismatched eyes – one blue, one brown – kept drawing their attention. Despite not being the breed they were initially looking for, something about this yellow lab mix was irresistible.
After submitting an application to the rescue and receiving approval, the family embarked on a three-hour journey that would change their lives. Upon meeting the four-month-old pup, it was an instant connection. The little dog greeted them with affection as if they were long-lost family. Without hesitation, they completed the adoption process, and the pup, now named Skye, after the Isle of Skye in Scotland, became a part of their family.
Skye's integration into the family wasn't without its challenges. Early on, she exhibited signs of demodex, a type of mange, but with care and treatment, she made a full recovery. According to the American Kennel Club, demodex is relatively common in puppies and can be effectively treated, leading to a healthy and happy life for the affected dogs.
Inspired by the rescue community's dedication, the family decided to become foster parents for dogs in need. Over the next year and a half, they opened their home to five foster dogs, each with their own story and path to a forever home. Fostering provided them with the opportunity to nurture and prepare these dogs for adoption, a truly fulfilling experience.
Their fifth foster dog, a German Shepherd mix with a sunny yellow coat, captured their hearts in a unique way. Recognizing the special bond that had formed, the family reached out to the rescue to express their desire to adopt her. In the fostering community, this is affectionately known as a "foster fail," a term that reflects the deep connections that can form between foster families and their charges. The rescue agreed, and Savanna became a permanent member of the family.
Skye and Savanna quickly became inseparable, each with their distinct personality. Skye, the laid-back yellow lab mix, and Savanna, the energetic German Shepherd mix, complemented each other perfectly. Together, they have created a harmonious and loving environment in their forever home.
This story is a beautiful example of the positive impact that pet adoption and fostering can have. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year. By choosing to adopt and foster, families like this one play a crucial role in reducing the number of animals euthanized and providing loving homes for those in need.
