If you are only just starting to learn to play golf then probably the last thing you want is bad weather. It is difficult enough after all mastering the basics of the game in fine weather and nearly impossible if you are trying to do so in a strong wind or in a downpour.

But things begin to change once you gain a bit of experience and confidence and one thing that I enjoy about golf is that the weather can change the playing conditions in a matter of moments and present the players with a new and different set of challenges. This adds to the fun of the game as far as I am concerned and is something to be embraced enthusiastically.

So, next time you are out on the course do not allow frustration to get the better of you and abandon your round but rather press on and enjoy the challenge of the new playing conditions.

Of course playing in high winds is not going to do anything to lower your score but the trick is to merely recognize this fact and not to let it worry you. You do not have to allow the poor weather conditions to stress you out and playing golf in bad weather conditions is merely a matter of adopting a positive attitude of mind.

The secret is to expect that the wind will do its best to challenge you at every shot and bring your well hit drive up short or send your approach shot scurrying clear across the green. The wind will attempt to send your ball in all directions except the one in which you want it go and you are going to find yourself slicing and hooking to left and right with quite a few lost balls. But this is no more than the inevitability of permitting the weather to join in as a playing partner and it can be very interesting to pit your wits against the force of Mother Nature.

Another secret to playing golf in adverse weather is to remember the old proverb that the harder you push against something the harder it pushes back. So, do not try to fight against Mother Nature but instead outsmart her and learn to use her to your own advantage.

If you are addressing the ball on the tee with a strong wind blowing across the hole from right to left for instance then see how well you are able to judge Mother Nature by gauging exactly how far to the right you have to hit the ball and still have it hit its target.

It might be nice to potter around the course on a sunny and still day with friends but, usually, your day will also be extremely predictable. Add in a strong wind blowing the leaves around the course and suddenly things can become much more interesting.
