Coho make for great freshwater and saltwater fish.  They stay in freshwater for a couple of years after being born before making their way to saltwater.  After a few more years they will return to freshwater streams to spawn and die.

It is best for you to fish for silver salmon during this spawning time.  This is usually later in the season.  You would be best off to schedule your trip anywhere between August and October when silver salmon fishing in Alaska.

As mentioned earlier, these fish are very aggressive and acrobatic.  They will put up a terrible fight once hooked.  Therefore it is very important for you to use a rod which is flexible enough to handle them. 

It is best for you to use light tackle for Coho.  Any rod or reel you use should support at least 15 to 20 pound test lines.  The water can also be very turbulent which can cause problems, which is the reason it is so important to use a flexible rod.

These fish are also very active during rainy weather.  If it is not rainy they also like to be active when the sky is overcast.  This usually is not a problem in Alaska since the weather can turn inclement at a moment's notice.
