Asus takes a nifty approach in its $3,000 attempt to be all things to all people with its ROG Flow X13, a 13.3-inch, 2.9-pound two-in-one laptop
Asus has been one of the most innovative laptop manufacturers of the last few years. They have introduced new features to the global laptop market that were previously never even imagined. With its consistent pursuit of excellence, it is all set to become the biggest player in the laptop market in the coming decade. At CES 2021, Asus revealed ROG Flow X13 which is undoubtedly going to be one of the best laptops of this year.

At first glance, no one would guess that the 0.62 inches thick, 2.9 pounds, 13.4-inch laptop can replace most gaming laptops in the market right now. If that was not surprising enough, you can flip the screen and use it as a tablet. The 2-in-1 convertible laptop is not unusual however, there is hardly any other laptop of this kind that can be used for gaming. The 13-inch ROG Flow X13 might look like just another high-end productivity machine but it has AMD’s Ryzen 9 5980HS. The powerful processor has eight cores and 16 threads, which makes it one of the most powerful CPUs that you are likely to find in a 13-inch chassis.
Flow X13 has 32GB memory that comes with 1TB storage. It also has an entry-level Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 and 120Hz FHD display which is rare even for premium laptops. On paper, the laptop is good enough to compete with Dell XPS 13 as an excellent multimedia device in the $1,000-$2,000 price range. However, there is one strange thing that Asus is trying with ROG Flow X13. It is selling the laptop with their very own external GPU called XG Mobile which according to Asus will deliver power equivalent to the GeForce RTX 3080, which is Nvidia’s top of the line. As of now, one can only buy the laptop bundled with the XG mobile which will cost $3,299,99.
Although Asus ROG Flow X13 is without a doubt a great machine the price tag is a bit too high. Even some high-end gaming laptops are not as expensive as Flow X13. It is twice the price of the Zephyrus G14, and $1,000 more than the Razer Blade Stealth 13, the two best ultraportable gaming laptops. Flow X13 is an excellent laptop but Asus is probably making a mistake by positioning it as a gaming laptop and slapping a price tag of more than $3,000. It can hold its own with the premium gaming laptops but it can still not justify its price tag.
Like most Asus laptops Flow X13 comes with an ErgoLift hinge that tilts the keyboard slightly off the table. Just like other high-end business laptops X13 also comes with a 16:10 screen. The slight change in the aspect ratio provides more vertical space which means much less scrolling and zooming out. The panel is compatible with Asus Pen and it is highly scratch-resistant. The touchscreen works fine and does not leave behind any smudges or fingerprints.
As far as the keyboards are concerned, they are quite similar to the Zephyrus G14. There is hardly anything to complain about, the nice backlighting, the resounding click, and good travel are more than enough to satisfy most users. However, there is one aspect in which Asus ROG Flow X13 will disappoint some people and that is its battery life. Even in the Battery Save mode, the laptop lasts somewhere around 6 hours. It gets worse while playing games and lasts just over an hour. So, if you are looking for a laptop with long battery life, Flow X13 might disappoint you.
The eGPU function as an external USB dock and provides a lot of extra ports. It has one audio combo jack, one DC input jack, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one DP 1.4, one Ethernet jack, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C, and one HDMI 2.0b. The laptop, therefore, has more than enough ports.
ROG Flow X13 can be used as a work and entertainment laptop. Its great screen is ideal for content consumption while its processor is good enough to run some of the heaviest games in the market. With the XG Mobile, it becomes a premium 4K gaming laptop, so the opportunities are endless. Flow X13 is the best gaming, entertainment, and work laptop that you can get. The only factors that might turn some people away are probably its high price or the poor battery life. Barring that ROG Flow X13 is the best 2-in-1 convertible gaming laptop that you can buy.
