A Voyage of Discovery and Connection

The Allure of the Valentine Junk

On my fourth visit to Ha Long Bay,Celebrating the Splendor of Ha Long Bay Articles I had the pleasure of sharing the experience with my mother aboard the Valentine, a wooden junk operated by Indochina Sails. This trip marked a special moment, reminiscent of our first seaside adventure when I was ten. Now, as an adult, I cherished the opportunity to relax beside her, enveloped by the night's serenity and the silhouettes of towering limestone pillars. Our first evening was punctuated by the spontaneous waltz of a Western couple, inspired by the gentle sway of our vessel and the melodies that danced through the air.

Embarking on the Journey

Our anticipation grew as we boarded the Valentine, a vessel reminiscent of a bygone era with its French-style elegance. The cabin welcomed us with its cozy ambiance, white linens, and a bouquet of Madonna lilies, framing a breathtaking seascape through large windows.

Leisure and Exploration

The initial day was spent soaking in the sun on deck and unwinding in our cabin. While the junk offered excursions to Bat Cave, Cua Van fishing village, and Soi Sim Beach, the allure of the floating paradise was too strong to resist. At night, the limestone formations and twinkling stars provided a natural spectacle from the comfort of our beds.

A Day of Activity and Indulgence

After a restful sleep, possibly aided by the evening's red wine and the lilies' sweet fragrance, we awoke energized for a tai chi session on the sun deck. A day-trip boat then whisked us away to the bay's secluded corners, where we indulged in a breakfast buffet featuring an array of Western favorites and authentic Vietnamese pho.

Unspoiled Beauty and Adventure

Our journey led us to Ngoc Vung Island, where a bicycle ride through pristine forests culminated in a secluded white sand beach. The afternoon's highlight was kayaking in the Cong Do area, an activity that initially daunted my mother due to her inexperience and inability to swim. Nevertheless, we navigated the calm waters, weaving through the limestone mazes to discover hidden spots inaccessible to larger boats.

Culinary Delights and Squid Fishing

The day concluded with a sumptuous grilled seafood dinner, followed by an excursion to observe squid fishing—a joyful experience that brought laughter and shared stories among the passengers.

The Majestic Sung Sot Cave

On our final morning, we ventured to Sung Sot Cave, an impressive limestone cavern requiring an ascent up stone steps to reveal its grand chambers adorned with colossal stalactites and stalagmites.

Fond Farewells and Lasting Memories

Our cruise concluded with heartfelt goodbyes to the staff as we returned to shore, carrying with us memories of a journey that transcended a simple vacation. Ha Long Bay, with its ever-unfolding mysteries, beckons travelers to return and uncover its many hidden tales.
