Embark on a journey through the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay and the enchanting landscapes of Cat Ba Island. Discover the luxury and intimacy of a smaller cruise ship, delve into the geological marvels of ancient caves, and immerse yourself in the local culture and festivities. Whether it's kayaking through serene bays, celebrating special occasions, or exploring the island's rustic charm on two wheels, this adventure promises a blend of relaxation and excitement.
Our journey began with an early morning pickup, the skies overcast but thankfully free from rain. After collecting our fellow travelers, we embarked on a three-hour drive to our destination. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the Indochina Sails luxury cruise, a vessel boasting a 16-berth capacity, yet with only six of us on board, the experience promised to be exceptionally personal. Our guide, Suan, was a fountain of knowledge, having dedicated seven years to studying tourism at university.
The cruise set off, gliding for two hours towards the secluded Lan Ha Bay. Here, we marveled at the grandeur of ancient caves, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that have withstood the test of time. Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spans over 1,500 square kilometers and is dotted with limestone and dolomite islets, each telling a story millions of years old.
Our next adventure was kayaking, a test of endurance that left us with wet clothes and sore muscles. Despite the physical challenge, the experience was a unique way to connect with the bay's tranquil beauty.
Dinner aboard the cruise was a seafood affair, a theme that had become all too familiar, leaving us craving a bit of culinary variety.
The following morning, my 40th birthday, we disembarked at Cat Ba Island. Accompanied by Suan and a small group, we embarked on a two-hour mountain bike ride through breathtaking scenery, greeted warmly by the local community.
After cycling, we settled into our hotel in Cat Ba town, a place caught between traditional charm and a clear drive towards tourism, evident from the burgeoning high-rise hotels and karaoke bars.
The evening was spent in high spirits, celebrating with fellow travelers in a karaoke bar, where birthday festivities led to an unforgettable duet performance.
With the sun finally shining, we rented motorbikes to explore Cat Ba's roads. The sparse traffic made for a delightful ride, serving as a prelude to our upcoming motorbike journey from Hoi An to Da Lat.
