Winter Park Resort, Colorado's longest-running ski destination, has recently undergone a transformative $100 million development, introducing a vibrant new base village that enhances the resort's appeal beyond its renowned skiing conditions. This investment marks a significant milestone for the resort, which has been a favorite among winter sports enthusiasts for its 69th consecutive ski season.

A New Hub of Activity at Winter Park Resort

Historically,Winter Park Resort's $100 Million Transformation: A New Era for Colorado's Oldest Ski Destination Articles Winter Park Resort has been celebrated for its exceptional skiing and reliable snowfall. However, the base area lacked the lively atmosphere found in the nearby town of Winter Park, which has been the primary location for dining, shopping, and entertainment. This is set to change with the unveiling of the new base village, which promises to create a bustling center of activity right at the foot of the slopes.

The Village Expansion: Shops, Dining, and Living Spaces

The new "Village at Winter Park Resort" boasts an impressive 30,000 square feet of commercial space, featuring a mix of shops, restaurants, and upscale living accommodations. This expansion complements the Zephyr Mountain Lodge, the resort's premier ski-in, ski-out lodging option. The village's culinary scene is set to delight visitors with a variety of dining options, including:

  • Cheeky Monkey: A Belgian bistro with an extensive selection of Belgian beers.
  • Lime Mexican Restaurant: Offering a taste of Mexican cuisine.
  • A family-friendly Italian restaurant for a hearty meal after a day on the slopes.

In addition to these eateries, the village welcomes new retail outlets like Fuzzywig's Candy Store and a T-shirt shop, enhancing the shopping experience for guests.

On-Mountain Dining Enhancements

The resort's commitment to improving the guest experience extends to on-mountain dining as well. Both Snoasis and the Club Car restaurant at Mary Jane have undergone renovations, providing skiers and snowboarders with a wider range of dining options and improved facilities.

Year-Round Recreation and Scenic Beauty

A picturesque pond nestled between the Lodge and the village serves as a tranquil spot for relaxation and year-round recreation, offering ice skating in the winter and fishing in the summer.

The New Village Cabriolet

The introduction of the new village cabriolet, an open-air gondola, represents a $5.6 million investment that enhances accessibility within the resort. Spanning 1,436 feet, the cabriolet has a capacity of 2,800 people per hour and is designed to accommodate guests, their equipment, wheelchairs, and even mountain bikes during the summer months. The cabriolet, which was completed in time for the opening day on November 19, 2008, is a central feature of the village and operates on 200 megawatts of renewable energy credits. Additionally, a new enclosed parking garage offers convenient parking options for those willing to pay for closer access.

On-Mountain Improvements

Over the past five years, Winter Park Resort has also made significant on-mountain improvements, including:

  • The Super Gauge 6-pack chairlift at Mary Jane, replacing the old Summit lift for faster ascents.
  • The Panoramic Express, North America's highest 6-pack lift, connecting Sunnyside to the top of Parsenn Bowl.
  • The Eagle Wind lift, opening up challenging natural terrain with mostly black runs.
  • New glading in Parsenn Bowl, creating more accessible tree runs and adding popular blue runs like Parry's Peak and Forever Eva.

A New Alpine Experience

The development of the new village at Winter Park Resort is set to provide guests with a more comprehensive alpine experience, combining excellent dining and shopping options with the resort's enhanced terrain, faster lifts, and consistently great snow conditions.

Helen Brown, owner of Chalets USA, which offers chalet and apartment lodging throughout Colorado to UK guests, is enthusiastic about the new additions to Winter Park. She notes that the new village will offer a more complete alpine experience, prompting her to include ski-in, ski-out apartments at Zephyr Mountain Lodge in her accommodation options for the 2008/9 ski season.

Winter Park Resort's transformation is a testament to its evolution from a beloved ski destination to a full-fledged mountain resort with amenities that cater to a wide range of preferences and activities. With these enhancements, the resort is poised to attract even more visitors seeking a premier mountain experience in Colorado.
