Embark on a journey through the heart of South Africa's bushveld, where the allure of the Big 5 beckons. Our safari adventure takes us to the lesser-known, yet equally enchanting, private game reserves of Marakele and Welgevonden. With their expansive landscapes and commitment to exclusivity, these reserves offer a unique and intimate wildlife experience, free from the crowds and malaria concerns that often accompany such adventures.
Marakele and Welgevonden Game Reserves, sprawling over 33,000 and 35,000 hectares respectively, are hidden gems in the Waterberg region, just north of Tshwane (formerly known as Pretoria). These reserves are sanctuaries for the Big 5 and are distinguished by their commitment to conservation and guest experience. The prohibition of private vehicles ensures a serene environment, as visitors are greeted by lodge hosts at designated welcoming areas. This policy not only enhances the guest experience but also aids in the effective management of the reserves.
The malaria-free status of these reserves is increasingly appealing to travelers seeking a worry-free wildlife encounter. The diverse topography, from rolling hills to meandering rivers, creates a picturesque backdrop for an unforgettable safari.
Our first stop, Marataba Safari Company, is a standout within the Marakele Private Game Reserve. This lodge is a testament to the seamless integration of luxury and nature, offering guests a taste of a bygone era while catering to the modern safari-goer's needs. The tented accommodations are among the finest, providing spacious and well-appointed living spaces with thoughtful touches that elevate the experience.
However, the true essence of a safari lies in the expertise of the ranger. Despite the impressive amenities, our experience with the ranger at Marataba fell short of expectations. Recognizing the importance of this role, we addressed our concerns with the management, who responded positively to our feedback.
The culinary offerings at Marataba were exceptional, with both dinner and breakfast showcasing the skill and hospitality of the staff and management team. This lodge is ideal for those seeking a five-star experience where luxury, hospitality, and knowledgeable staff are in abundance.
Recommended by a colleague, our next destination was Clearwater Lodges within the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. Tshetshepi Lodge, with its five suites, offers an intimate setting that embodies the Relais & Chateaux five C's: Care, Calm, Charm, Cuisine, and Character. The lodge's location against a mountain backdrop and the sound of a nearby brook create a tranquil retreat.
Our ranger, Dave, was a highlight of the stay, providing insightful and engaging game drives. His extensive knowledge of the local flora and fauna, coupled with his storytelling, made for an enriching experience. The Relais & Chateaux touch was evident in the quality of the accommodation and the communal dining experience, where guests could share stories and enjoy a meticulously prepared meal.
Our final stop, Makweti Safari Lodge, was a fitting conclusion to our journey. The management couple's passion and energy were palpable, enhancing our game drives and overall experience. Their commitment to conservation and sustainable management was evident through various in-house projects.
As the only guests, we enjoyed private rooms and a celebratory dinner, marking the first anniversary of Africa Tamed Tours & Travel. The evening was a testament to the company's vision and dedication to creating unique travel experiences.
While Welgevonden Private Game Reserve offers a variety of lodging options, our experience suggests that it is an ideal destination for those new to safari adventures. Although the density of the Big 5 was somewhat lower than expected, the exceptional accommodations and passionate staff more than compensated for this.
Marakele and Welgevonden Game Reserves offer a distinctive safari experience, combining the thrill of wildlife encounters with the luxury of top-tier accommodations. While some aspects may require attention, such as the expertise of the rangers, the overall experience is one of intimacy, comfort, and connection with the African wilderness. These reserves are a must-visit for those seeking an authentic and exclusive safari adventure.
