Aditya Varma ascended the throne in 1718, but it was Marthanada Varma who founded the state of Travancore in 1729, with Thiruvananthapuram as its capital. Initially, Padmanabhapuram was the capital, but it was later moved to Thiruvananthapuram in 1745. Marthanada Varma's reign saw significant modernization efforts, including the reconstruction of the Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

The British East India Company, seeking to station troops in the city, signed a treaty in 1791 under the guise of protecting Travancore from Mysore. Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's reign, which began in 1829 and lasted until 1847, along with the rule of Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal, is often referred to as the golden age of Thiruvananthapuram. After India's independence, Travancore joined the Indian Union, and Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of the newly formed state of Thiru-Kochi in 1949. Chitra Thirunal Bala Rama Varma served as the Rajpramukh. On November 1, 1956, the state of Kerala was created, with Thiruvananthapuram as its capital.
