The ultimate objective of any business website is to make as much sales as possible. Before you can accomplish this, however, you need to make your site visible to more potential customers by increasing overall site traffic.
At first, you may be wondering what graphic design could have to do with increasing website traffic as the two seem to be completely unrelated. But graphic design actually does have a large effect on the volume of traffic that your site generates. Upon visiting your website, people have a choice of whether to go in and look at the contents or move on to another site. If the design and layout of your homepage turns them off in any way, then it's very likely that they will leave just like that. Your products and services may be interesting but if the people won't bother looking, no one will buy what you're offering.
Therefore, it is very important to have a well-designed website that will entice prospective customers into coming in. Achieving this is not as hard as it sounds. You don't even need to have expert web design skills, although that would come in handy as well. But even ordinary people with no technical know-how on web design will be able to build a decent website by keeping the following pointers in mind:
1. Keep it simple. This is by far the most important thing you need to remember when doing graphic design for a website. For some reason, a lot of people think that flashier is better, but that is hardly ever the case. As a matter of fact, websites that have more subdued designs work far better than those that are in your face and loaded with graphics, especially the animated kinds.
2. Make your site easy to navigate. A complex site with several pages would require a site map on each page to make it easier for your visitors to navigate through your site. Even a relatively simple site should also have navigation buttons that are easy to find.
3. Achieve a balance between graphic design and text. A website filled with text and no graphics is very boring and won't get many visitors, and the same is true for a website that has way too many graphic elements that they overpower the text. Make sure there is a balance between these two components.
4. Avoid using very large graphics. The bigger the graphics, the longer it will take to load. You certainly don't want your visitors waiting for several minutes for your pictures to load so be sure to resize them before using them on your site.
You may not be able to get it right the first time or even the second time but if you keep these simple tips in mind, it won't be long before you are able to tweak your website so that it will have that perfect design you are looking for.
