The idea of designing your own website can be daunting and exciting. Often we jump right in without any preparation or planning. My father had a saying that, try as I might, I never was able to forget. Proper prior planning prevents poor performance, or the 6 P's for short.

First, just spend some time thinking about what your website will be about. Jot down these ideas. Then find those ideas that tie closely together and draw a line from one to the other. This can help in page construction through hyper-links.

Next, begin sketching how you might want the page to look. Is there a border at the top and would you rather use large buttons or lists? You don't have to get too specific with the wording or layout at first. Let ideas come and go. Test them together and see what fits, and more importantly what looks good to you.

Your finished paper product will probably look much like your webpage, with a page in your notebook for every page on your site. Now comes the time to actually code it. This part will be easier as you already know what you want to do. Using the many free resources on the internet your website fantasy will quite quickly become an internet reality.

Finally, test your webpage, on different browsers and even on different machines if possible. Do all of the links work? Do the color schemes make it easy to read? Turn the lights on and off in the room, does that make a difference? Visit your page frequently and update it often. Test links to other pages on the internet often as well. Sites change, especially news related sites, and your intended article or video may not exist there anymore.
