Do you find yourself wearing the same items in your closet over and over again? Do you have a handful of pieces that you love, but you’re not exactly sure what’s hanging at the back of your closet? You’re not alone – we’re all guilty of this crime of fashion. It’s the old 80/20 rule: we tend to neglect 80% of what’s in our closet and only wear the other 20%.
If you often find yourself reaching for the same few items in your closet, you're not alone. According to the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule, we typically wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. This means a significant portion of our wardrobe goes unused, leading to clutter and inefficiency.
To build a wardrobe that truly represents you, it's essential to become a ruthless editor. This means eliminating items that no longer fit, flatter, or resonate with your personal style. As fashion icon Diana Vreeland once said, "Elegance is refusal." Knowing what works for you and discarding the rest is the key to a stylish wardrobe.
Start by creating four boxes and label them as follows:
As you go through your closet, try on each item and ask yourself:
If you can't answer "yes" to at least two of these questions, place the item in one of your four boxes.
Once you've purged your closet, arrange the remaining items by category (e.g., pants, short-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve shirts, skirts, dresses). Then, within each category, organize items by color. This will make it easier to see what you have and create cohesive outfits.
Tape up the Save box and set it aside for 60 days. If you don't need any of the items during this time or even forget what's inside, it's time to donate, consign, or sell them.
After purging and organizing, you can realistically assess what new items you need to complete your ideal look. Whether it's a slim black pencil skirt, a cropped leather jacket, colorful silk scarves, or statement jewelry, adding the right pieces can elevate your style.
Stylish individuals are confident, intriguing, and intelligent. They take the time to organize, assess, and adjust their wardrobe to reflect their personal style. By following these steps, you can create a closet that not only looks good but also makes you feel good.
