Unfortunately, Christian has also come to realize that he loves Ana to the point that he is willing to tone down any kinkiness and go straight, as hard as it is for him. Yes, author E L James has begun to flesh out the characters in the second volume of here "Shades of Gray" series.
James, an excellent writer whose quick-witted observations only serve to enhance the story, shows us there is much more to Anastasia than meets the eye. Her character is something like an iceberg; most of it is out of sight waiting for us to discover the depths of Ana's character, all the while dealing with the changing nature of Ana's lover Christian.
You would not have thought it possible that a young author who was just trying to do an interview with Gray to see exactly what made the entrepreneur tick could smite a man as powerful as Christian Gray. However, that is what happens and James handles it with a deft touch.
Indeed, Christian, while still liking his "special" room and "special games" is actually willing to give it up so he can be with Ana. However, Ana is still exploring her own tastes and, despite the promised changes, James keeps the relationship "special" through most of the work.
One wonders with all of the twists and turns that James has masterfully built into the first two books, including the return of the "scorned woman" -- the woman Christian leaves to become involved with Ana -- just where the third piece of the trilogy will take you and the characters.
James, a television executive and mother of two small children, has an inventive style that takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotion and self-realization that is too good to miss.
This isn't the kind of book that will stand up to the scrutiny that we gave Shakespeare's work in secondary school, but, as we noted, it is not that kind of book. It is simply a book for you to read and enjoy and we are sure you will. And, while we don't have the foggiest notion what will happen in Book 3, we do know that James' innate sense of fairness and fair play will have Christian and Ana working it out in the end.
The question on everyone from the New York Time Best-Seller list to Entertainment Weekly's collective mind seems to be just how the author will work it out? Here's one answer we know that is true right now: James will take the characters where they have to go to wind up the story.
