English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton coined the term ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ in 1839 and this phrase alone shows how powerful and important the pen is in our world. The pen is the most used and widely popular of all writing instruments and its presence in the written communication field is undeniable. Their overwhelming use has seen multiple companies coming with newer technology each and everyday to make our writing experience with pens smoother,Highlighters Make Things Stand Out Articles more economical and convenient.

Pens nowadays come in long lists of different types and kinds and manufacturers have also branched out to different types that cater to a wide variety of needs such as for writing on white boards, on glass, plastic, for school and office use, and just about any type of surface that you would want to write on.

Highlighters are one of the new breeds of writing instruments in the new age. Highlighters are produced as a form of a felt-tip pen and they come in bright, fluorescent colors. The reason for calling them highlighters is that these pens are used to mark certain sections of documents to ‘highlight’ them to the reader. Not only is the ink in highlighters fluorescent, it is also translucent, enabling the text beneath the highlight to be read clearly. The inks in these pens will glow under black light and the most common color is yellow but highlighters can also be found in colors like pink, green, orange blue and purple.

The highlighter is part of the felt-tip pen family and the first felt-tip pen was invented in 1962 in Japan by Yukio Horie. The company Avery Dennison Corporation invented and trademarked the world’s first highlighter pen and named it Hi-Liter. Highlighter pens are available in retractable form and some come with an eraser at the opposite end of the felt tip. Another popular variation of these pens is in the form of ‘trilighters’ which are triangular in shape and have different colored tips at each corner. One other variant is stackable highlighters. These types of pens enable you to snap them together in a stack of 3 to 5 highlighters.

From the felt-tip variants, there are also the dry line highlighters or also known as dry highlighters. Instead of the felt tip as its writing point, these dry highlighters have applicators that enable you to apply a strip of highlighter tape on surfaces other than paper such as plastic and glass or audio cassette tapes. They can also be used on CDs. These types of highlighters pens are easily erasable and are not permanent compared to the standard versions.

Highlighter is a great tool to magnify and draw attention to the most important detail out of the whole passage. It is an extremely helpful tool for reviewing notes because it saves a lot of time looking only at the important materials. There are times when highlighters are given out free with discount pens as part of promotional reasons and marketing initiatives. Discount pens are much cheaper than your average priced pens and are frequently sold in bulks.
