Shantanu and Nikhil are a designer-duo, best known for adding a subtle Indian traditional touch to contemporary outfits. They both are inspired by the traditions of India and merge them with contemporary and modern fabrics. As a brand Shantanu and Nikhil say ‘ we have always reiterated our vision of belonging to something that is bigger than ourselves. We don’t wish to preach or dictate, we believe that clothes create the dialogue. It is a brand for strong men and women who represent the mentality of fighting for what they believe in.’
Shantanu pursued MBA from the University of Toledo, Ohio, US. During this time he understood the potential in the Indian Fashion Industry and also learned about how to establish your own business. During the 90s Indian Fashion Industry was in its nascent stage. There were a lot of budding designers but the industry was not functioning professionally. Shantanu understood the potential market requirements which would help him to create a strong position in the industry. Whereas the other brother Nikhil, was the one with the creative gene. He enrolled for an advanced course at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in L.A, California. He earned many scholarships and awards from the institute. During his time there he gained a lot of exposure in the fashion market and was the first ever Indian designer to have had a show at Universal Studio, Hollywood.
In 1999 both Shantanu and Nikhil decided to work together. They both decided to combine their strengths, business skills and creativity together to launch their own label ‘Shantanu and Nikhil.’ They decided to design something contemporary with traditional style in order to target the younger generation. Their goal was to create trendy and futuristic fashion. They began with men’s wear clothing and gained recognition for the same. In 2001 they decided to launch their collection at India’s Fashion Week for women called ‘Diffusion’ and ‘Couture.’ In 2003 they both decided to experiment with fashion and launched their western collection including chic sportswear, trousers paired with short kurtis, banarasi georgette and chiffon bustiers with skirts. To add richness to their garments they decided to work with Indian fabrics and embroideries. Their brand has two stores at New Delhi and their clothing is retailed at many national and international couture showrooms in New York, Birmingham, Vancouver, London, Jeddah, Tokyo, Switzerland, Dubai and Kuwait.
Shantanu and Nikhil have designed outfits for many Bollywood celebrities and cricketers like Amitabh Bachchan, Zaheer Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Glen McGrath, Stephen Fleming, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Leander Paes, Neha Dhupia, Shilpa Shetty, A.R.
