The saree festival or mela is truly a celebration of the beautiful Indian attire, saree that has graced the feminine form since time immemorial. This year the festival started in Mumbai at Kala Ghoda, on 22nd of September 2016 and ran through 25th September, 2016. The Delhi-based organization Red Earth, which hosts festivals and works closely with various art forms, was behind successfully running this event. The festival was hosted in Delhi too and it will be taking place in Chennai and Bangalore soon.

 

In Mumbai, the first day comprised of the Saree Shopping Walk. It was led by Himanshu Verma who is a festival curator. The walk touched upon not very popular shops from areas around Dadar and Matunga. The event saw beautiful traditional swirls of the garment unfurled to be picked by connoisseurs and the novice alike.  Participants joined the walk in Indian traditional wear – sarees and dhotis.

 

The next day, 23rd September 2016, was celebrated as the Saree Styling Jam. The entire event made saree draping a fun and exciting affair. The various styles of wearing the six yards and accessorizing it were completely inspiring and fascinating. There were interactive sessions, presentations on draping the saree and features talks. The occasion was graced by well-known personalities like Amisha Shah, Swati Mukund, and Sonia Mehta.

 

The third day, 24th September, was exclusively for a poetic evening that celebrated the beauty and the voyage of the saree and Mumbai. It saw the gracious presence of personalities like Barnali Ray Shukla, Arundhati Subramaniam, Anjali Purohit, Smita Sahay and Neela Bhagwat.

 

It came to an end on 25th September 2016, creating a buzz about the saree among Mumbaikars. It projected the saree in a new light, encouraging women to embrace this beautiful garment whole-heartedly. Within our busy schedule, how often do we drape a saree? Most of us obviously don it during special occasions. This festival of sarees has created awareness among modern women that a saree has its own beauty that cannot be surpassed by any outfit. It has motivated and inspired young women to grab the six yards once again and walk tall in any sphere of life.
