The past and the present of body piercing jewelry

The oldest body piercing jewelry is that which is worn on the nose and ears. During the old days there were the communities that considered this type of jewelry to be spiritual, for example some ancient Egyptian communities. Such communities would conduct the process of piercing as a ritual on a regular basis. Some communities even had beliefs that associated the future of an individual with the jewelry. In a country like Egypt, at some point it was also believed that this type of jewelry was only for the royal family.

However, in other communities the jewelry was just a symbol of their culture and tradition which they carried through generations. This meant that every member of the community had to have his or her body pierced at a certain age.  In ancient Rome, the warriors believed that body piercing jewelry was not just a form of beauty on their body but a symbol of their strength. During the middle ages different communities stopped the use of this type of jewelry and even spoke against it. As time went by, the people who acquired plenty of wealth started to rebel against this norm in their communities.

These rich men would use body piercing jewelry to distinguish themselves from the other members of the society who were not as rich as them. This kind of rebellion has also been seen in the recent days where youth have rebelled against the norm in their society by adorning body piercing jewelry. The youth is not entirely to blame because most of the times they are just imitating what is being done by the rock stars who are famous for this kind of jewelry. In any case, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. These are the people who really overdo this form of beautification.

There are people who use the body piercing jewelry in a decent manner to bring out more of their beauty and elegance. A good example would be in India where piercing of nose and ears is done for the purposes of beauty.

There are people who will use body piercing jewelry so that they can be unique, others will do it as a form of gay identification and there are also those people who will use the jewelry to get sexually stimulated. Currently, the piercing of the body will be done by professionals and this means that they will take the necessary precautions to avoid transmission of infections. For example, the instruments that are used in the process will be sterilized before being used.
