The Lincoln MKS is set to become the first in a series of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models to feature the innovative EcoBoost technology. This advancement promises more power and fewer emissions from a smaller engine, revolutionizing consumer expectations for performance and fuel efficiency.
The Lincoln MKS will soon be joined by the Lincoln MKT crossover, but the real game-changer is Ford Motor Company's introduction of EcoBoost technology. This engine innovation is poised to redefine how consumers perceive power and fuel emissions. Starting in July 2009, the Lincoln MKS will be the first of many models to incorporate this long-anticipated technology.
Introduced in Spring 2008 for the 2009 model year, the Lincoln MKS has faced challenges due to its 3.7L V-6 engine, which lacks the V-8 option that many luxury car buyers prefer. Competing models like the Cadillac STS, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes E-Class offer more powerful engines, putting the MKS at a disadvantage.
Ford Motor Company has recognized this gap and developed the EcoBoost engine technology to address it. The new twin-turbo direct injection 3.5L V-6 engine, although smaller than the current 3.7L V-6, will deliver power comparable to a V-8. This engine will produce 355 horsepower and 350 ft.-lb. of torque, providing the MKS with the authority it needs to compete in the luxury sedan market.
The EcoBoost engine in the Lincoln MKS will offer power equivalent to Ford's 4.6L V-8 engine. Specifically, the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 will deliver 355 horsepower and 350 ft.-lb. of torque across a wide rpm range. This ensures a responsive and powerful driving experience.
Despite the increased power, the EcoBoost engine is expected to match or exceed the fuel economy of the current 3.7L V-6 engine, which delivers 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Preliminary numbers from Ford suggest a one mpg improvement in both city and highway driving for the new engine.
The EcoBoost option will add $5,000 to the base price of the Lincoln MKS, bringing it to just over $47,000. While this is slightly below the price of competitors like the BMW 535i and Audi A6, Ford believes the MKS's standard features will justify the higher cost. These features include adaptive high-intensity-discharge headlights with auto high-beam, 19-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear window power shade.
The introduction of EcoBoost technology in the Lincoln MKS marks a significant milestone for Ford Motor Company. By offering more power and improved fuel efficiency, the EcoBoost engine addresses the needs of luxury car buyers and positions the MKS as a strong competitor in its class.
By integrating EcoBoost technology, Ford is not only enhancing the performance of the Lincoln MKS but also contributing to a more sustainable automotive future.
