DALI LED driver is a power supply for LED lighting that integrates DALI control interface. DALI is an intelligent addressable digital lighting control interface, with which each light is addressable and can be configured for group control. DALI also provides scene control function that enables users to recall a predefined light value or save a light value.
A DALI control system requires a bus power supply that provides power to DALI bus, control devices and control gears. The control devices are master LED controllers that sends out DALI signal and the control gears are slave LED controllers that receives signal. The DALI LED driver is a slave that converts DALI to PWM to dim the connected LED light. The control device can be a rotary knob or a touch panel.
Every slave controller has to be assigned with a single light address so that they can be controlled individually or assigned with a group address for group control. Total 64 light addresses and 16 group addresses are available in a system. Generally, a master controller is required to do above work. But some DALI LED drivers in the market can assign address manually, which means users can greatly save installation costs and time.
To evaluate a DALI LED driver, following features are the most important standards:
The first feature is power factor and efficiency, power factor is parameter that defines the power that does useful work. Efficiency is parameter defines how energy efficient a driver is. Both of them are the most important parameters.
The second feature is the capacitors it adopts. The quality and lifetime of the capacitors directly decide the quality and lifetime of an LED driver. You can consult the supplier which brand capacitor their driver use. Rubycon is famous capacitor brand that is adopted by many suppliers.
The third feature is flicker free dimming. This is the most important standard, a dimmable driver will always be used to dim the brightness of connected LED light. If the dimming process has flickering, which will be harmful to human eyes. Using a smart phone to take video of the light when dimming will help you to check whether it is flicker free or not.
The fourth feature is noise. A good driver will be silent when working. The factor to result in noise may be high ripple current or PWM frequency. A silent one shall have low ripple current or PWM frequency.
