A dimmable LED driver is an LED power supply which has dimmer function, it converts AC main input to DC output and is suitable for powering and dimming the DC input LED lamps.
The input voltage of dimmable LED drivers can be different depending on the design. Some may have wide input voltage range and suitable for most countries in the world, some may have narrow input voltage range and suitable for one country or area. The output can be constant current or constant voltage to fit different types of DC LED lighting. The constant current version can be used for LED downlights and LED panel lights, and the constant voltage version can be used for DC LED strip lights.
The driver outputs PWM signal to the connected LED lamps to achieve dimming function. There are several important parameters to evaluate a dimmable driver. First is power factor and efficiency, which decide whether it is energy efficient enough. Second is dimming range, which decides whether it is dimmable to the level you would like. Third is PWM frequency, which decides whether it is flickering or has noise when dimming. Fourth is the components it adopts, which decide whether it has long lifetime or not.
To control dimmable LED driver, we need a control unit. First we have to figure out which control interface the driver has. There are various types of interface available including RF/WiFi wireless, 0-10V, DMX, DALI and so forth. Among them, DMX and DALI can be intelligent solutions that enables you to control each single lamp, groups, scenes in the system.
A DMX LED driver is designed with built-in DMX interface which receives DMX signal and can be controlled by universal DMX master controllers, each DMX512 system capacity can be up to 512 lamps due to 512 addresses it has. A DALI LED driver is designed with built-in DALI interface which receives DALI signal and can be controlled by universal DALI master controllers, each DALI system capacity can be up to 64 lamps due to 64 addresses it has. Both of them enable to control single lamp, groups and scenes.
