It is easy to get so caught up in the deadlines, achieving goals that we set for ourselves, and staying afloat, that we find ourselves sleeping less and less, never exercising, and neglecting our hobbies and even our loved ones.
This is an easy trap to fall into, and a very dangerous one.
Entrepreneurs who don’t find a healthy work-life balance usually end up burnt out.
It is important to remember that as an entrepreneur, you are not only pursuing a dream, you are pursuing a vision of yourself, and chasing after the person you want to see yourself become.
Is that the future you – tired, wrinkled and worn-out? Probably not.
Finding a good work-life balance can be challenging, because building a successful venture of any kind does take a lot of time and hard work. There are a few things though that you can start paying attention to.
Make time for your loved ones
These relationships are extremely valuable. These people are your support system. Explain to them that you may not be around as much because you are spending time working on your business, but let them know that you still love them, and want the time you spend with them to be special. Set aside one or two nights a week for your family and friends and schedule it in your calendar, like any other work meeting. It is non-negotiable, and let your work-colleagues know that.
Sleep
You are no good to anyone if you are tired and unable to think clearly from lack of sleep. Decide how many hours you need to keep you going throughout the day. Then, because you know you have underestimated that figure, add one hour to that. Sleep is crucial to rejuvenate your mind and body. Whatever you are working on at 4 in the morning every day, can wait 4 hours more.
Exercise
You may not have time anymore to work out two hours a day, three times a week in the gym. This doesn’t mean though that you should never exercise and become a sloth. Take breaks during your workday and go for 10 to 15 minute walks. Even short jogs can do wonders for your health. Do ten minutes of yoga when you wake up, and ten more before you sleep. Exercise is good for your body and your mind. You will never regret taking fifteen minutes out of your day to treat your body with respect.
Set limits
Keep work in your office. Even if you have a home office, it’s a big mistake to let work come with you all the time. Set little guidelines for yourself like, “My laptop shall never enter my bedroom,” or, “Mondays and Fridays are the only nights I will stay late in my office.” You never know, those breaks from your computer may give you the spark of inspiration you were waiting for!
