In many cases,
the thought of house cleaning can result in thoughts of wasted time, disgusted faces and pouting throughout. With so many things to consider on a daily basis (work, kids, social life, etc.) it can be difficult to find the time to fit this little task in. Yet… for many of us, cleaning house is a necessity which must be dealt with in some fashion. Such is why, starting up a maid service is such a wonderful idea. If you happen to have a knack for tidying up, chances are that you’ll be able to find someone willing to pay you to do it for them. However, certain steps must be taken into consideration, and as such we have come up with a ‘how to’ list, which if followed, can help you realize your new career as a cleaning professional.
Step 1 – Every neighborhood is different. Ask around and keep an open eye to see what the demand is like in your neighborhood. You may find that there are quite a few services already in practice, or you just may find yourself with an untapped market on your hands. Additionally, get in contact with similar services in the area to find out about their specific service areas and rates.
Step 2 – Get your house cleaning materials in order. Be sure to have your basics covered; a few rags, dusters and brooms to start. If you’re a little more ambitious, you may want to invest in a vacuum or two. While some households may allow you to use their cleaning products, it’s always a good idea to have your own handy. Stock up on Windex and various other household cleaners.
Step 3 – You’ll also require a business permit. In order to legally run a cleaning service you must be current on all of your paperwork. This will also help you to appear all the more trustworthy to potential customers. Be sure to have this step taken care of prior to taking any jobs.
Step 4 – Once you’re legal, it’s time to make people aware of your existence. Advertise on the internet and in community periodicals. Invest time and money into flyers and pass them out to neighborhood residents. If there are any community bulletin boards, you may decide to add posters about house cleaning. Be sure to place your contact information on any and all advertisements and ask friends and family members to spread the word.
Step 5 – When you begin to get clients, treat them like gold. There is no better advertisement in the world than a job well done, and your clients will likely show their gratitude in their continued business as well as by telling friends and neighbors about your service.
Step 6 – As you watch your business grow, you may decide to start expanding. Do this carefully, as you do not want to take on more employees than you have work. Once the demand is there, it’s time for new faces. Continue to advertise and watch the cash roll in.
