Here is a small guide to help you to prepare for acclimate for High Altitude 

Being able to adapt to the high altitudes of Leh is the most important part of your trip to Leh. Do not hurry on your trip, make sure you give time for your body to adapt to the low atmospheric pressure. You will at least need to reserve the first 2 days following your arrival in Leh for getting used to the high altitude. Do not rush and start with the places to visit. Else you could get severely attacked by Acute Mountain Sickness which may lead to harsh headaches, vomiting, uneasiness, or even weakness to walk or inability to think and ataxia which may spoil your vacation. Even the fittest people are hit by acute mountain sickness. 

Here are some tips and precautions to keep in mind on your trip to Leh:

  1. Being physically fit is the main point you need to check while travelling to Ladakh region.
  2. You should not be visiting Ladakh if you suffer from high blood pressure, heart ailments and asthma.
  3. Balance climbing with rest to help your body acclimatize and gradually increase your altitude.
  4. After reaching Leh travellers need to rest for around 2 days, because of low atmospheric pressure at Leh. 
  5. Dehydration does not certainly lead to AMS. But staying hydrated is important but overdoing it could harm you. Increase your normal water intake by a litre and that will be enough. 
  6. While the cold weather, shelter your head and ears with warm clothes. Don’t exhaust yourself physically too much. Never run out of excitement particularly on passes. Lowering oxygen levels could drive to drowsiness and it can be difficult to catch your breath. Few people may faint or in critical cases, they may even pass away.
  7. Carry some precautionary medicines do help acclimatization and handle altitude sickness. The most common medicine is Diamox. The local version of this medication, a time experimented and natural alternative is garlic soup or soup cooked with lots of garlic.
  8. If you experience or undergo any symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue, rest immediately and move to the lower region without any delay if you are at a high altitude. 
  9. It can be hard to quit smoking and drinking but it is recommended you should avoid smoking and drinking alcohol at a high altitude to prevent AMS.
  10. If you are flying straight to Leh, you still need to take two days to rest. Through this period, you could go on a short trip to places like Thiksey, Hemis, Shey, Nimoo and Stok etc. to tour monasteries and palaces.
  11. Avoid sleeping during the day time of the trip.
