What is the definition of polymorphism or dimorphism in nature? Why such phenomena are exhibited by some species of plants and animals? Is such phenomenon called ‘polymorphism’ or ‘dimorphism’ is so obvious in corporate world also?
The biological term, polymorphism refers to the existence of different morphological forms of some species within the same population. For example, the lion and lioness are distinct morphologically and such distinction can be established easily as lion has a majestic ‘mane’ which is absent in lioness. In the case of cuckoo or sparrow also, the male and female birds are distinguishable morphologically. Such distinguishable morphological difference is called dimorphism or polymorphism in nature.
When the male and female animals are distinct, it is called sexual dimorphism.
There are several other types of polymorphism also has been seen in animals. White tiger, black tiger, white lion etc., are some examples for different colour polymorphs or colour polymorphism.
One may wonder as why and how the term ‘polymorphism’ or ‘dimorphism’ is so relevant in the corporate world?
The definition of polymorphism or dimorphism although refers only to the ‘morphological aspect’ in nature, but in corporate, the employees exhibit ‘behavioural polymorphism’ and not the morphologic polymorphism as seen in nature.
The interesting point is that the polymorphism or dimorphism seen in nature is considered to be as a consequence of some gene mutation or selection or due to some strong evolutionary necessity or significance. But the behavioural polymorphism seen among many corporate employees may not be due the consequence of some corporate realities.
Such behavioural polymorphism seen in corporate employees has a definite intent and purpose to achieve. Hence it has to be considered as prime cause for achieving a definite goal in the corporate.
It is well known that most corporate employees behave differently in different situations. Personal interest and self gratification only trigger them to behave differently in most corporate.
They behave as if they have discovered the truth ‘only now’ and hence they have decided to change the tune. They would have been largely supporting some idea or a cause or some people for a while. The moment they realize that their ‘right loaf of bread’ is on the other side of the table, they may coolly shift the gear and prove the best form of behavioural dimorphism.
To get their loaf of bred only they exhibits such dimorphic or polymorphic behaviour in the organization. What ‘gene’ (s) does in animal or plant world, the ‘need’ does in human world. What happens in animals/plants as a consequence of some biological/genetic reasons, act as a cause for the corporate man to carve his meaning and purpose in the corporate.
There are different types of polymorphisms has been established such as colour polymorphism, sex dimorphism etc in nature. Similarly, the ‘behavioural polymorphism’ seen in corporate also can be classified as
1. Situational polymorphism
2. Opportunistic/opportunity driven polymorphism
3. Sadistic pleasure oriented polymorphism
In some situation, the employees may not exhibit their views or opinion. In such situation either they may remain silent or join the gallery. Situational polymorphism is very common to the human world.
The opportunistic polymorphism is truly need based. To grab the opportunity, one may behave differently without distinguishing what is right and what is wrong.
The third type of polymorphism is relatively more dangerous. Just to derive some sadistic pleasure, some may breach every code of conduct or ethics. Spontaneously, these people show up their polymorphic talents in the corporate just to destabilize someone.
