There are several ways in which you can obtain an A&P license. All of them include an oral and practical test that is managed by a Designated Maintenance Examiner.
To get an A&P license, you’ll also need to take the required Federal Aviation Administration tests. However, you can only request doing these tests, after you did up prior aircraft mechanic experience. In other words: you need some practical experience, before being allowed to take the tests. So how do you get this experience?
Option 1: the military sign off
You can join the military and work on their aircraft for a sufficient amount of time to qualify to take the oral and practical test and become a “military sign off.” A military sign off is someone who has just enough experience to be eligible for the application.
Option2: Get a Degree in Aviation Maintenance from a school
The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) Program is a great alternative because of the short span of the course. The typical aviation maintenance program offered at other institutions ranges in the region of 17-24 months in length.
The school continues from 24 months and 12 months, normally required by FAA for on the job training. When you graduate, you are qualified to take FAA’s tests. Grads regularly get higher starting salaries than individuals who got their mandatory experience in one of many other two manners.
The FAA allows qualified students qualifications for early (practical) testing. This enables qualified students the privilege of earning the certificates that are necessary, during their study. This permits them to work in a profession area promptly upon conclusion of training. No longer do you have to wait until after graduation to take the A&P examinations and start the interview process for employment.
Option3: Become a mechanic’s apprentice
A third option, that pays better than the military, is to get work as a mechanic’s apprentice at a fight school. It takes longer than going to school, with a minimal requirement of 36 months before you can take your evaluation, but it is a means of hands on training. If you’re actually going to go up in the aircraft you also pay a little more focus to repairs you’ve just fixed for a test flight.
After you did up the experience, it’s time to prepare yourself for the application. Gather and organize files detailing you aircraft maintenance experience. The documentation should contain dates, aircraft types, N numbers, pay slips, photo identifications, procedures performed and signatures of your supervisors.
Then go to your local FSDO (FAA Flight Standards District Office). This is when you’ll present all your documentation proving that you’re qualified to proceed with the tests. You may be asked oral question about your work history, aircraft and engine types and processes performed.
If most of your documentation is in order the FSDO will issue an 8610-2 form. Before taking oral and practical test it is required to have the 8610. Then upon successful conclusion of practical and oral assessment, you’ll be issued a temporary permit by the Designated Mechanic Examiner immediately. Your real a&p license will be sent to you by the FAA within 120 days from the date of your final test.
