Event management is a tough and competitive industry to break into, but what are employers looking for? What skills and qualities would make you an asset to an events company?
The industry can be full of highs but along with this comes hard work, determination and the ability to handle stressful situations. You need to possess the attributes to deal with anything that is thrown at you.
Some of the skills which are valuable and will help you break into this thriving industry include being able to think and act quickly and to respond to clients requests immediately in a positive and creative way. This type of career isn’t just about sitting behind a desk, but you need to be both proactive and creative and then have the resources to back this up.
From helping to organise the Isle of Wight Festival to putting together a corporate dinner, you need to be able to work with all kinds of people and adapt to each of their needs.
Along with creativity and passion, you need to be level headed and calm in times of crisis. Not everything is going to run smoothly and in the event of a disaster you need to think clearly and be able to put contingency plans in place if things go wrong.
A few ways to get into the industry include studying for a degree in events management and work experience. A degree provides you with an excellent foundation in the industry and background knowledge, whilst work experience gives you a hands on approach and allows you to make valuable contacts in the industry.
A foot in the door - The Eventice
The Eventice (brainchild of Event magazine and ESP Recruitment) is an innovative and new approach for finding the best in new talent in the events industry. The first Eventice was held last year and due to the success it is being repeated in 2012.
In the style of The Apprentice, it is a competition that invites those already studying courses that relate to events management at universities to apply. Students were required to submit a video to enter the competition that will see one winner land a job in events management at either the Tarsus Group, or George P Johnson.
The students had to answer 5 questions surrounding their motivation for wanting a career in this industry and their experience of truly great events.
Those who make it through to the final will be presented with a series of challenges at Confex between the 6th and 8th March to fight for the prize. The finalists will have their challenges closely monitored by a team of judges made up of industry representatives and representatives of both Tarsus and George P Johnson. Once the candidates have completed the tasks they will be subjected to a number of interviews and a final presentation in front of the judging panel and the audience at Confex.
