The main focus of this article is the installation of the RBC32 replacement battery into the Back-UPS XS 1500 battery backup system manufactured by APC. The model number established by APC for this particular unit I will be working on is XS1500. The XS1500 unit requires the RBC32 replacement battery which you can obtain directly through the American Power Conversion Co., or you can save a bit of cash flow by searching around the world-wide-web.
XS1500 Battery Installation
The first step is to un-plug the unit and everything attached to it. Some units manufactured by APC are hot-swappable, meaning the unit can stay active on the power grid while a technician replaces the batteries. However, since I can not guarantee that your particular unit is hot-swappable, or that you are a certified APC technician, I recommend un-plugging the unit as well as anything it may be an alternative power-source to. After taking the unit off-line, its time to begin taking out the old battery. The battery compartment of the XS1500 is located on the front of the unit towards the bottom. If you look at the unit while it’s in an upright position, the front seems to be divided into two panels, one lower and one upper. The battery compartment is situated behind the lower panel which will come off by applying a bit of pressure and then sliding it off.
Once the compartment panel is off, you will see a large grey plug that connects the battery to the Back-UPS XS 1500. The plug can be disengaged by grasping the wires on each side and tugging. After disconnecting the plug, it is important to take note of how the battery is positioned, and which side the plug is located on. The RBC32 replacement battery will only fit into the unit one way! Once you have the position memorized, you can slide the battery pack out of the unit by pulling on the grey plug and using it to slide the battery pack from the unit.
It is now time to install the RBC32 replacement battery (in the proper position) into the battery compartment and attach the grey clip. After attaching the clip, you can then seal the unit by re-attaching the plastic panel on the unit. This brings the installation of the RBC32 battery into the XS1500 unit to a conclusion, congratulations! I hope that this article has proved itself handy during your APC replacement battery installation.
